Hi, this is my first post on the forums. I was thinking of getting a 2ds this holiday season just to mod it. Is it possible? here are my ideas

1. Cut away the plastic to reveal the whole 2ds screen
I don't know if the whole thing is backlit or works, but I would like to make it like a nintendo tablet.

2. Remove the nand chip. Boot from the sd card.

3. Install alternate operating system on the sd card -- i.e. Android or something

It would be even cooler if i could enable a switch or something that connected to 2 sd card slots, one with the nintendo os and one with Android

Here are some questions and problems...
1. Will the 2ds boot from an sd card?
2. If I flash-dumped (not sure about the term) a copy of the nintendo firmware onto an sd card and removed the nand chip, would I still be able to receive new updates to the firmware?
3. Not sure if the whole screen will work
4. I have to learn how to solder if i want to have 2 sd card slots, can't solder for the life of me yet
5. Will Android work with the peripherals? i.e. the camera, wifi, etc.

Everything is pretty much theoretical in my mind now. I just thought it would be really cool if I could video chat on skype with the 2ds and play videos and navigate using the nintendo controls. It would also be cool because I know java and could program for my 3ds without spending thousands of dollars to get the nintendo development kits.

No, no and pretty much no. BTW what makes you think 3DS is able to run a Java virtual machine? Normally (depends on the engine and preferences of the developer) games are programmed with C# (not saying this aplies for all games/engines).

2. No, are you dreaming?
3. Impossible (you can't sign an os)

1. No, bootrom boots always from NAND
2. With a NAND redirection method not a big problem (see smealum's redNAND) (without removing NAND!)
5. No, no drivers exist

To answer this question, its impossible

There`s no real Linux kernel for RISC processor (correct me if im wrong)

And also, its impossible to make android work here. this is a game console, and it will stay as it is, maybe you can make a homebrew to emulate Macos? (just like psp)

Any other OS you would be running would have to be custom coded for the 2DS and the exploit you used.
I don't see why you would want a 2DS for android, it wouldn't be optimized at all for the hardware used in the 2DS.

Even if it was possible the hardware in the 3DS will be terrible for android. It's probably comparable to smartphones from 2010.

I will list several reasons, some p robably already said, why this will not work.

1. The hardware.
1.a No drivers
1.b hardware is designed for 3DSOS
1.c Hardware is underpowered

2. Software
2.a There is no current way of even remotely loading homebrew
2.b How would you manage the OS?

3 Bootloader
The bootloader secures the OS. It sees when the chip is missing (and probably if it's replaced) and then just bluescreens.

It would take a lot of effort, and a new exploit as well, to pull this off. If you want to do try it, please do, but keep this points in thought.
