DotA 2, (like DotA) is a moba (massive online battle arena) game, similar to League of Legends, and Heroes of Newerth, both of which were modeled after the original DotA with their respective tweaks to the traditional moba formula. DotA 2 is being developed by Valve in collaboration with IceFrog, the original creator of DotA

DeMoN: keys are getting more rare as Valve isn't giving out friend invites anymore. But apparently some people have gotten invites this week, so I'm hoping to get mine soon. If you haven't signed up for the beta, you can still sign up by taking a survey on steam.

Is there a thread here for DOTA 2? We should totally start one (threads for pokemon, trading friendcodes and stuff) where we invite for games, may be even make teams, trade steam ids......and play, of course

IceFrog is not the original creator of DotA. The first DotA maps were made by Eul(who last thing I heard was working at Valve before work on Dota2 started) and then it was taken over by Guinsoo, who handed it over to IceFrog when guinsoo teamed up with Riot to make League of Legends.

@[member='demon'] I think I still have an invite sitting in my inventory.

I'm pretty sure Riot came up with the term "MOBA" so I dunno if that's what the genre's name actually should be. Not saying Riot is bad or anything, I do like League quite a bit, but I dunno if MOBA is the right term.

MOBA is just a name of the genre they came up with so they wouldn't have to call their game a DOTA game.

I've had an invite for quite some time already, I played it for like 5 minutes and then uninstalled it again. That was before my LoL-craze though, maybe I would like it more now :)

well, dota isn't very noob friendly.
because of all the information you have to know so you can at least play decent.

and dota 2's tutorials aren't out yet.

Well LoL isn't noob friendly either. At least the community isn't. If there's a system in place that automatically links you with other players around your level, it's all good IMHO. That's the biggest thing they need to have, linking people with other people on the same skill level.

Should try Smite if you have a MOBA craving.
It's like LoL or DOTA2...except it has the added bonus of actually being fun. Plus you quite clearly play with people your rank/skill level (and start in noob queue for the first 5 ranks anyway...). You get the occasional douchetrain, but it's easy enough to just mute them and keep doing your own thing and learning the game (looking back on all my LPs I was god awful, with very little actual complaining from my team).
