What's the point? Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate has the XP Mode feature.
Well, on the one hand people tend to think virtualization is slow (when in reality on newer hardware it can be full speed minus a little resource usage) so it might be good enough for him, but on the other hand not everybody has those versions and he may not need XP (if his complaint is something that 7 will actually do).

XP isn't dead yet... April 2014 is the extended support end date, that's when the security patches will come to a complete halt. It's just mainstream support (over the phone support, etc) did end in 2009.

But in my honest opinion... stick with Windows 7.

If you have 4GB of RAM, XP won't support all of your RAM.
Only about 3.5GB I think... Or maybe a bit less.
Unless you have 64 bits, which could support up to 128GB of ram.
But XP 64 bits sucks apparently.

Windows 7 isn't the greatest, but it's surely not Vista (thank god it's better) >.>
XP however... is just outdated. Even with updates it's not as secure as Windows 7, also rather ugly in comparison.
If you have like 1GB RAM, yeah, go with XP.
If you have like 2-3GB+ yeah go with Windows 7.
Windows 7 is useless on 1GB RAM and runs poorly regardless of what anyone says, it doesn't compare to a 2-3GB+ system running it.

Going back to XP would be like dressing in 1999 attire and going to high school expecting everyone to like it.
