A friend of mine has a black Wii. He was more then a little disappointed when he learned that it couldn't run Gamecube backups from a burnt disk. I'm wondering if it's possible to put in a mod chip in his Wii to play backups from a burnt disk? Is that possible?

If not, is it possible to find some other way to run Gamecube backups?

@Ben
Afaik all black wiis come with drives that can't read any dvd-r.
A regular modchip will not change that unless you change the drive too.

Some modchips emulate the whole drive from sd/usb and could be used (wode, sundriver, ...)

Swiss can run GC from sd/usb too

@Ephen
If you have a drive that can read dvd-r you dont need a modchip
softmods work for gc too (cmios), even for multidisk afaik but im not sure

I guess most modchips should work
but a dvd-r capable drive in a black wii is really nonstandard
check what drive it is and check compability

sorry i meant to say i can play backups from usb (big difference) i have a LU5052 serial it says:
The console has model number RVL-001(USA), produced for Mexico/Canada/USA.
There is a 100% chance the chipset is GC2-DMS.

so what modchip would i need. i just modded my moms older wii and she can play backups of gamecube copies i just tried and it makes me very sad lol. i just want a modchip to be able to play gc backups on a multi disk. wiikey 2?

not really set on the WiiKey 2 i just dont know much about wii's so yea pretty noobish, i was just wondering if there was anything similar to an acekard 2i ( as in cheap in price but great compatibility)

It's a black Wii that is about 7 months old. I'm fairly sure it has whatever drive the black Wiis have since they were made.

He's not having issues with Wii backups, as that's all done from the USB port.

Personally I would use softmod (no hw fidling) or wode (gc usb loading).
But you should be able to use most normal modchips too.
I dont know the details about all of them, sorry.
But Imho they far inferior.

Beware that multi disk as you use it is ambigous.
There are multi disk games (1 game on two disks) and multi game disks (moding 2+ games onto 1 disk)
The former should be supported by almost chip (including wode). Im not sure about softmods (just try)
The later is supported in softmods and obsolete in wode, other chips might varry.
A combination of both is difficult to tell, you would need to look in the docs of whatever you are considering (on wode it obviously obsolete too)
