Hardware What's wrong with the building quality?

I've been around for several weeks, and... since the 3DS was released in the US, I noticed that many complain about hinges, dead pixels, SD Card problems, low speaker volume, Black Screens of Death...
For now, all we know is that many users are complaining about their new systems having a lot of hardware-related issues.

Like, what's wrong? Is it because it's the first batch? Or maybe they didn't care a lot about quality checks?

You can always make use of your warranty, but it's not nice to return your brand new system just because it's full of problems out of the box. It also gives Nintendo a bad reputation.
Have you had any other issues with your Nintendo 3DS that haven't been mentioned here? ._.

Probably the combination of both. It is a first batch and quality check is not very through.

Yeah they messed up, but there's really no guarantee that they'll fix these issues in later shipments.
Case in point: I have three DS lites, all bought at various times throughout the lifespan (launch, after 1.5 years, and after 2 years). They all have problems.

The 3DS, just as the DSi(XL), can be upgraded like a psp (if you know, anyways), so they can release firmware updates that will fix those kinds of issues.

..... or that's what I think Nintendo will do.

I think most of the problems will be fixed by a new firmware update or when a new 3DS batch comes to the 3DS sellers.

Keep in mind though, Nintendo have sold thousands of 3DS units. People are only going to post to complain about issues. You're not going to see people posting about how good the build quality is and how they aren't having any issues. This creates a huge negative bias. The majority of people, (myself included) aren't having issues.

Just something to think about, before you conclude that nintendo's build quality is terrible.

It's because
1: Americans expect perfection from everything since they have a whacked out sense on entitlement.
2: There's a huge number of consoles out there, and everyone who you see talking about hardware issues are the people with defective units. It's about scale.

Mine has a manufacture date of 2010, so QC wasn't an issue I'd imagine.

My 3DS is fine. The only issue was with a game, so I exchanged it for a diff. game. Since then, NO black screen errors.

I have had pretty much every Nintendo console and the build quality has been top notch, including the 3DS. They didn't mess up.

This. I've had zero issues with my 3DS. A minority of people will make a lot of noise when they have hardware issues and such. It's to be expected that any hardware has a degree of fault. I just don't think it's that widespread for the 3DS.

Ah I usually get lucky and this was the case with the 3DS too, have to issues with it so far. The only thing is the way the edges are designed around the touch screen rubs against the top screen forming temporary and maybe even some permanent markings. Of course this is a universal issue with the way the system was designed (I suspect it'll be fixed sometime later and if not you can expect it in a redesign). I wisely ordered some Hori protectors before launch and installed them the moment I opened my 3DS.

I have been quite happy with my 3ds. I did get the black screens twice once right after the other,but no problems since then. Even better it actually connects to my wifi which my ds & dsi will not. My only complaint is the home select and start buttons I prefer the raised buttons,nothing to write to nintendo about.

Yes but have you seen the poll about the hinge wobble? The percentage of people with hinge problems is far greater than the percentage of those who do not. You can't make the assumption that people on GBAtemp are just unlucky. If this were a larger poll, say on GameFAQs, then I'm sure the results will be the same.

Yes but have you seen the poll about the hinge wobble? The percentage of people with hinge problems is far greater than the percentage of those who do not. You can't make the assumption that people on GBAtemp are just unlucky. If this were a larger poll, say on GameFAQs, then I'm sure the results will be the same.

You do see that some of those wobbles can be force and some wobble may actually prevent cracking.

Well, Nintendo seems to have pretty decent build quality with their first model products, it kinda surprises me that people would have so much bad to say about the build quality of the 3DS.

The DS Phat was a goddamn tank. That thing holds up surprisingly well. It's mainly why I don't bother buying a DSL or a DSi, since those things seem to crap out in like two years. I've played my DS pretty hard over the 5+ years I've had it and everything works fine.

Gameboys and Gameboy Colors are also pretty badass. I don't know about GBAs, I only have a SP (which is still pretty solid).

Nintendo seem to cut out a lot of build quality in favor of a lighter and more cost efficient device, they did at least with the DS. Whether that trade off is worth it is really up to you.
