I think GBAtemp should go back to the numbers, because that gave you a better idea of how good the card is. If this is silver, people might think its as good as other cards, like the DSTT.

OR, we could use imgod22222's somewhat retarted system. (No offense)

HELL YES: TALC! People ought to be ranked by rings with those minerals. I think I saw talc sparkle. (Kudos to whoever get that)

I agree with you science, it deserves a silver award.
Bronze is just for the rock-bottom, dun-buy-me flashcarts. :V
We respect your opinions, but really - he did the reviewing and felt it's a card worthy of the Silver award.

Excellent review, science - you got straight to the point, short & sweet, 'n' the pictures were hi-quality.

Also, expect the R6 Gold review in a few days (lost the bugger and I need it to make some last minute touches lol).

Eh. I dont care if it is fuck ugly. Most of us are using it to pirate games so why should we really care about what it looks like as long as the games load.

I changed the score to bronze, as another staff member who has played with it suggested to. But I would like to say this...

Don't just look at final score, read the entire thing.

I still stick by my standing of it being between a bronze and silver, but that rating is not a choice.

science: don't debate your score. you are mag staff for a reason, i trust your views and everyone else should as well. the beauty of the edit button is that you can always go back and fix stuff you didn't like. i never saw a rule that said you can't tweak out your articles until they are how you want them, after posting!

as for ds doom you need the prboom.wad, dsdoom.nds, and doom.wad in the root of the msd. i've had luck with dsdoom.nds being in a sub folder and the rest in root, but for testing i would put them all in root as required in the readme. i don't recall what the shareware wad is named but you might have to rename it to doom.wad. dsdoom will not load a wad of another name. some say the config file is required, but it isn't. doom 1.2 will run just fine without it. if you change an option in the prboom options screen then one will be created.

if you need *help* just PM me and i'll set you up.

he could easily just say "it got a silver because it does what it says it will, but it should be considered to be one step above a bronze" or something along those lines. no need to go back to the number system when one sentence will carry the explanation.

a quick read of his well written conclusion wraps up his thought process for both the kit and his choice of awards.

to me it looks like the r4. it does what it says it will do on the box and appears to do it well. while the gui might not be top end, that does not hurt the compatibility of the kit. what would make it a bronze to sliver for me is how often the team updates the loader and fixes issues with old/new games. if that is kept up than this easily should get a silver. if it doesn't than its just another dead in the water kit gone the way of the r4.

people need to remember to read the review. just because a kit get a silver doesn't mean run out and buy it. it means it did what it should do but didn't have enough extras to push it to the "WOW" factor of a gold award.

Thanks AW, I'll give it a try again tomorrow.

And I think you make a good point. If this team shows that they can update the cart and keep up with it, I will re-raise the score to a silver.

Yeah, I also don't think it should have gotten a silver, but I guess it's up to the reviewer, and not the people reading it.

I love the DS color. Was it store bought, or is it a replacement shell?

I bought it second hand, but it is official, the colour is Ice Blue, and you can only get it in Asia and Europe (although I think you might be able to get it in North America now as part of a bundle)

i've got an ice blue but i hate it, it's so ugly. was surprised to learn they don't get sold in NA/Canada tho

Reading hurts my brain. I need a number-score I can just glance at.
I give it a 9/10. Without even having used it. Just picked it out of thin air. For fun. Why aren't you buying three eight copies of this flashcart already?!

If you don't have the time or willpower to read a review for ten minutes, then you deserve to lose money on a bad product.

TBH, if this card is just another R4 clone I don't think it should deserve any kind of score. Giving it any kind of "award" is equivalent to suggesting people to buy this thing, IMHO, and I don't think this should be done. A big red warning that reads "avoid that thing like the plague" would be the more correct thing to do. Hiding that in abstract formulations like "The NPlayer does what its supposed to do: play games", "If all you want to do is play some ROMs and homebrew, then this card could be for you" or a "Bronze Award" gives away it's quality to people that can read between the lines, but not everyone will get this.

This card is somewhere on the bottom of the quality scale of what's available and I think this should be spelled out in clear words. "Bronze" doesn't cut it.

I think there should be three different parts to the score:

A brokendown points section oon different features. (compatability, GUI, Ease of USe etc)

An award, showing how it stacks up to what it promises and other cards of its kind.

A score comparing it to all the other flashcards.

I like the fact that you guys always open the cart and take a photo of the inner workings, but you only posted one side of the chip though.
Good review!

If you want more images read my review in my signature (Its also linked to on the NPLAYER website too! )...

I was one of the first to get the NPLAYER and to be honest its one of the better R4 clones it's still working and all games are working with the exception of THINK KIDS of which I've emailed them several times but still not fixed!

was supposed to be fixed in 3.05 kernel but still not

If you like and prefer R4 cards then this is a good alternative if you disregard the other R4 Clones!

I still switch between it for testing things out homebrew usually ... (used recently to test moonshell 2)

(compare the features of these 2 cards ...)

Come on ... this can't be true!
And that for a crappy R4 fake .... my oh my ...

Did you even read the review?

Honestly, from what I've heard from science it's a really good flashcart even though it seems to be a clone of the R4. Also notice the difference between this flashcart and all the other R4 clones: This flashcart is not advertised as an R4, it's advertised as a completely different flashcart and therefore it seems that the people who make it doesn't want it to be bundled with all the other clones.

This.

Seriously, read the review. And the score has been changed to a bronze, but if the team shows they can keep updating it, then I am changing the score back to a silver.

Since my Initial review Science ......the kernel has undergone 4 updates to date 1 happened at the same time of my review (which I documented in the review as 3.02 and the other 3 afterwards (now current kernel version is 3.05)

Thats good to know, thanks for letting me know that. I'll see if they can keep that up, and especially fix that broken game.
