My girlfriend needs a Mac for school, but she (like myself) is not a big fan of Mac nor of paying $2500 for a laptop when she could pay $1000 and get a better laptop. We were looking at the Asus F8Sp-X1. Could somebody with one of these tell me what the hardware is/if it is compatible for installing OSx86 Leopard? I have a Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD.

I can't seem to find any info on the actual hardware other than it has a Core 2 Duo T5750 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. I need to know about the WiFi, sound, PCI, mobo and any other specs anyone has that could be helpful. If anyone knows what they are and/or if they are OSx86 compatible.

We need to know about this soon since she needs it by the 19th.

Try getting a used MacBook Pro from eBay or somewhere else, I used to have OSX86 as well before I got my MacBook Pro but the real deal is way much better.

The equivalent Mac of that laptop is the MacBook which can be bought from the US Education online store for $999. I suspect that will run OS X, although I can't be sure....

Edit: Just seen this aswell. Could get her a free iPod whilst you're at it

I can tell you the mac is the way to go. And if you badly need the shitty Windows, you can install it officially thanks to Boot Camp, an application made by Apple.

A simple macbook for $900 is enough for her (go in the education store by the way). Why would she need a macbook pro anyway ?

And if you buy a PC and try to install Leopard OS86, good luck with it (you need the compatible specs) and no support from Apple since it's illegal (and stupid because you can say "bye-bye" to updates).

I really don't know. They art majors are required to get Macs and the business majors are required to get Dell Satelites.

And about refurbs, the refurbs are still $700-$1500 more expensive than the Asus for similar specs and the Asus still has higher specs. And she really does not want a Mac. She does not like OS X and will only be using it when she is absolutely required. And on top of all that, 13" is too small, so it would have to be a MacBook Pro (she is a photography major). A real MacBook simply is not in the cards as her family cannot afford to pay $1500 more than they have to, yet the university is requiring OS X.

Shitty Windows? :\ No.

It's not illegal, Apple EULA doesn't dictate law.

How about you take your ignorant fanyboyism elsewhere? I need help and will not tolerate this turning into some OS war. You clearly know nothing about OSx86 (do the words Vanilla Kernel mean anything to you?). And who the hell are you to decide what specs are good enough? She knows what she wants and it is NOT a MacBook. Grow up and take your head out of Steve Jobs' ass.

And I've already explained why it must be a Pro. Also, they do, in fact, require a Mac. I don't know why, but art majors require them. I think it is one of the most retarded things they could have done, but there's nothing else I can really do about it.

So does anyone actually know anything about this laptop?

Sorry, while hackintosh has matured alot, hackintosh runs like crap on laptops. You will need to get a real mac or deal with overheating, no sound/wifi, and issues in retards to CPU power management, low battery life, and more.

Also, dealing with issues like updates effectivly bricking the install and the like are not fun unless you know what you are doing. This machine will get "bricked", and you won't be able to fix it without formating and reinstalling.

Buy the real thing.

Okay, people like this really need to STFU. If you don't know about this laptop, DON'T POST HERE. And FYI, DrKupo, I know about the hardware issues which is the ENTIRE REASON I POSTED. I want to know what the hardware is so I can address the issues it may or may not have. Also, she is NOT going to use OS X very much, only when she NEEDS to. She doesn't like OS X and is going to use it as occasionally as humanly possible. We know the issues and they are worth it compared to $1500 more that her and her family cannot afford.

And BTW, I know my way around computers more than well enough to be able to repair whatever goes wrong, they keep most of their data on their networked external AND if that is not enough, her father is a computer engineer, so we are fine. Let's not worry about what the process is and get back to the issue at hand.

Quite frankly, this machine will not do. Hackintosh is for technically users. It is not to be used by random girlfriend who WILL brick the install and it will not be fixable. Buy the real thing...you don't have another option.

No laptop works correctly as a hackintosh, they all have different issues. No currently-sold laptop works perfectly, and those that work perfectly can still get update-bricked.

You said a Mac were required, what would the college think if she were to come with a laptop with OSX86? Also there are quite many compability issues with laptops as said in the thread.

And it isn't some "random" girlfriend. She knows her way around computers as well and she is intelligent enough to not do something like that. Her father and myself will be doing the maintenance on it anyways. You're just spouting ignorant, trolling things and polluting this thread. Her family needs help. And try to understand something that I have now stated several times:

HER FAMILY CANNOT AFFORD A MACBOOK!!

The college isn't going to care what it looks like as long as it exceeds the minimum specs and runs all the applications she may need. And ENOUGH with the compatibility issues. I'm aware of them and that was the entire reason for this thread as I have now also had to say several times.

SHE HAS NO CHOICE!!!

Unless she enjoys getting bricked by updates, dealing with issues with Aperture which are due to hackintosh, no sound, no wifi she has no choice.

Also, running hackintosh requires a bit more then just knowing your way around, it requires extreme skill which I don't think she has.

I second that, even the so called "vanilla kernel" needed some fixes when 10.5.4 came. Also some programs refuses to run on Hackintoshes or will run very badly.

Such as Final Cut. Probably Aperture, as they are both professional programs.

I agree with DrKupo, a real Macbook is your only choice here. Sometimes macbooks show up on refurb apple store for as low as 700$. Which okay, isn't low, but relatively it is.

Listen, just stop. I'm going to address these issues one by one, once and for all.

1. Hardware compatibility: That's what I'm trying to find out with this thread. Clearly I'm never going to get the answers I need since you people have done nothing but shit all over this thread.

2. Knowledge: She is capable of doing this. You are making worthless, ignorant assumptions about her intelligence. Just shut the fuck up and grow up already. I know what she is capable of and this is certainly within her grasp. You know nothing about my knowledge of computers, her knowledge, and her father's knowledge? Get your ignorant stereotypes and assumptions out of my thread.

3. Updates: I have Kalyway 10.5.2 and I see no reason for her to even have to update AND she, obviously, isn't going to do any updates until we know everything will be fine. Everything she would need would run fine in 10.5.2 other than what won't run on a Hackintosh. Which brings me to my fourth point:

4. Software: Most of the time she is using it, she will be using Windows. OS X is really just a technicality. I have no doubt there will be no problems with software that actually cause any type of an issue.
