just wondering.. but its AK people that package the card reader?
If so could different failure rates be associated with different readers?
i have seen black one with some yellow behind word 'acekard' i think blue ones orange ones and black/grey ones with acekard written on them.
Could these help show which 'batch' or time period a card is from?

CycloDS and DS-X...

I really wouldn't put either of those carts at the top of the quality control pile. Although the Cyclo has improved a lot since all the "paper-shim" problems they had at first. (Given the price point of the Cyclo, it "should" be made considerably better than an AK2.

It was developed in Europe, but I believe it is manufactured in China just like the rest of them. Same goes for DS-X.

My first AK2 lasted 2 weeks before getting the infamous "FAT Error", it was replaced under warranty and this one is still going good after nearly 4 weeks.

From what I gather, the FAT Error usually happens within the first 2 weeks, so if my replacement is still OK after nearly 4 weeks, does that mean it's probably from a good batch, or is there a posibility it could still fail?

No one knows, that's why it's such a mess because we have no info on how to identify cards from the "bad batches". What we have are pretty much ticking time bombs.

Reports of FAT errors that I've seen have ranged from 2 days to 3 weeks from when the person started using their AK2. So, the longer you use it beyond 3 weeks I'm guessing the better your chances that you have a good one. Of course, nobody knows (except maybe Acekard) what the problem is, so it's hard to say exactly why one fails at a specific time. That said, the Acekard 2 has a 1 year warranty, so even if it fails you should be able to replace it.

Bottom rate components coupled with rushed manufacturing. Consider the fact that even a company like Microsoft had huge issues with their 360s, and those cost a lot more than the $12 or whatever the AK2 is currently priced at.

Also raise your hand if you ever owned a DS-X: I did. No, you do not want a DS-X. Go read the DS-X section of the board some time.

Mine worked for about 2 weeks (well only one week of real use) before I received the "processing do not turn off" error. Dealextreme isn't being too helpful in my attempt to return it, even though I have tested it to death, using several different SD cards, several versions of firmware, and tested in in 3 different Nintendo DS systems. Very frusterating.

For those of you who have just recevied AceKards, and they appear to work fine, just wait and see. It takes 1-2 weeks for the cards to go bad.

They didn't give me a hard time at all. I submitted a return request stating the details and the steps I had taken (I didn't mention opening the AK2, which I did do), and they just told me to get an estimate of the return shipping cost so that they could refund it, and then to send it back. I got the replacement more quickly than the original.
