Hi everyone!

I'm back with another Sonic port for the Nintendo Switch!

This time it's Sonic the Fighters, SEGA's classic Model 2 arcade fighting game.

This project is based on the open-source m2-hle2 emulator, with Switch-specific rendering, audio, controller support and performance improvements.

After quite a bit of work on graphics, loading, widescreen support and the original arcade gameplay, the game is now playable on real Nintendo Switch hardware.

I also made a few gameplay improvements, especially for Super Sonic!

Features

  • Original arcade title screen, character selection and progression.
  • Widescreen support, with an option to switch back to the original presentation.
  • Native Joy-Con and Pro Controller support.
  • Working sound effects and music.
  • Switch-specific rendering and loading optimizations.
  • In-game pause using the Minus (-) button.
  • One-button Hyper Mode activation using ZR.
  • Rebalanced Super Sonic transformation.
  • External ROM loading. The game ROM is not included in the NRO.

Super Sonic Changes

I made Super Sonic a little easier to unlock while keeping the game balanced.

  • Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds while playing as Sonic.
  • Super Sonic becomes available from stage 8 onward.
  • The original no-loss and no-continue restrictions have been removed.
  • Press ZR to activate the Hyper Mode command when the requirements are met.
  • Super Sonic takes only 25% of normal incoming damage, but he is not invincible.
You can now enjoy Super Sonic without completely breaking the difficulty of the game!

Required Game Files

You need your own legally obtained compatible arcade ROM:

sfight.zip

The ROM must remain zipped and must not be renamed.

No copyrighted ROM data is included with this project.

Installation

  1. Download sonic_fighters_nx.nro from the GitHub release.
  2. Create switch/sonic_fighters_nx/ on your SD card.
  3. Copy the NRO into that folder.
  4. Place your own compatible sfight.zip in the same folder.
Your final folder should contain:

SD:/switch/sonic_fighters_nx/

  • sonic_fighters_nx.nro
  • sfight.zip
Launch the game through the Homebrew Menu in application mode (title takeover).

Do not use Album/applet mode.

Controls

  • Left Stick / D-Pad - Move
  • B - Punch
  • A - Kick
  • Y - Guard
  • ZR - Hyper Mode
  • Plus (+) - Start
  • Minus (-) - Pause / Resume during gameplay
  • ZL + ZR + Plus (+) - Exit application
You can also switch between widescreen and original presentation using L + R + Right Stick Click.

Important

The port has been tested on real Nintendo Switch hardware.

It is based on m2-hle2 rather than a native recompilation of the arcade game.

The game runs with the original arcade progression, and performance can vary depending on the scene and rendering settings.

If the ROM is missing or incompatible, the application displays an error explaining the required file location.
