Steam Frame price revealed, waiting open until 17th September

After an accidental leaking of their review video from Linus Tech Tips last week, we somewhat knew that news on Steam's latest VR venture was imminent. Today the product page has been updated, with a few new details revealed for the first time. The headset is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and runs an ARM64 version of SteamOS. Through this you'll be able to natively run some of your Steam games directly on the headset itself. It should be noted however that the Steam Frame is listed as a "streaming-first" device, introducing some genuinely interesting tech to make wireless VR streaming feasible. There will be "Steam Frame Verified" markers coming to the storefront to give you an idea of what will run well when untethered though.

But let's get to the important part: the price. The Steam Frame is available in two flavours, with the cheaper model featuring 256GB of UFS storage, and its more expensive counterpart bumping that up to 1TB. Both models do feature a Micro SD card slot for expansion however. You can find the pricing below:
  • 256GB Kit - £889 / $1059
  • 1TB Kit - £1089 / $1299
Both variants do come with Half-Life: Alyx included, though there's no indication that the game will run natively on the platform.

Those interested in picking one up for themselves can now sign up for the wait list, much in the same manner as the Steam Machine. This list will remain open until 6pm on the 17th of September here in the UK, with all submissions then randomised. Within a day of the list closing, you can expect an email saying how long you're likely to be waiting for your unit.

Got mine yesterday. Haven't had much time to actually get into it yet, but I did set it up and briefly play around with it and yep, it's pretty much exactly what I expected it would be. Which is unexciting and good! Super initial impressions: the controllers feel kinda cheap, the speakers are fairly impressive to me for being open to your surroundings, and at least I needed the spacer ring for the face gasket.
Do you have something to compare it to like the quest 2?

Only the PSVR1 and the Lenovo Explorer WMR headset. Primarily the Lenovo. And in comparison, the Steam Frame feels far better balanced and better fit to my face, without looking up the weight difference it doesn't appear to be too bad. Display quality is obviously better here but it's been so long since I played my old VR platforms that I can't compare exactly how much, though this is my first one with adjustable IPD so that's nice (unless the PSVR1 did? idr). Controllers are a little nicer than the WMR controllers, and tracking feels smoother and so far more stable. The speakers on the Frame are a nice inclusion and sound decent, far nicer than having the headphone jack of the Explorer. And then the obvious benefit of not having to be tethered and being able to run everything local.

But beyond that it doesn't feel like anything groundbreaking. I expected it would more or less just be a nicer VR headset my 90hz tethered HMD from 2017 that runs Steam OS and isn't tethered and for me that's just what it is. And that's totally OK.

If the quest 2 was about the same I'd probably give up on technology tbf.
