Tokyo Xanadu eX+ was my very first Falcom game a few years ago and has grown to become one of my favourite games of all time. I had no clue a sequel was in the works until 3 or 4 months ago, you can imagine how happy I was when I found out
I didn't spoil myself at all, never watched any trailer or anything. I did a full replay of Tokyo Xanadu in the meantime to refresh my memory and prepare for what's next.
So Kyoto Xanadu is finally out and I played it a bit, it does a great job at recreating this "Xanadu" feel visually and musically. I'm already quite fond of the music and it won't be long before I listen to the whole soundtrack
I don't speak Japanese at all but from what I can tell it doesn't start very differently from Tokyo Xanadu : you get sucked in the otherworld, find out you have a soul device and go through a first tutorial dungeon. The main protagonist feels reminiscent of Yuuki and there's a Gorou-like teacher as well.
What changes dramatically is the gameplay. I was very, very fond of Tokyo Xanadu's gameplay so it's a bit of a disappointment to see it changed to some sort of 2D Metroidvania. Boss fights are in full 3D but everything else seems to have a 2D perspective, not that there's anything inherently wrong with that but I guess I'll have to get used to it. I wish at least the free time parts had remained in full 3D, it kinda feels like playing Ys III Wanderers From Ys
One thing I don't like at all is how most NPCs don't have eyes, it's very creepy and sucks a lot of life out the scenery, it's like you're wandering around zombies. Maybe it's plot-relevant, who knows. I really enjoyed how every NPC had their little storylines in Tokyo Xanadu and how you would eventually grow emotionally connected to them
There's of course a lot of game mechanics I understood nothing about so I'll have to wait for a western release, I hope it won't take too long. I realize I'm sounding a bit negative here but I'm very happy the game is out, I actually enjoyed it so far all in all, it's way too soon to form a definitve opinion anyway and I'm eager to play more and get to appreciate the new gameplay for what it is.
Have you tried Kyoto Xanadu, what do you think ?
