Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II set to launch digitally on Switch 2 today, unclear as to whether an upgrade path will be available

Announced today during the Octopath Traveler 8th Anniversary live stream, it's been confirmed that both the first game and its sequel will be launching on the Switch 2. Details remain sparse on exactly what these ports will feature, but going by Square Enix's other releases, we're likely looking at a bump to resolution and performance. It also remains to be seen whether any kind of upgrade path will be made available for the games, with this being something not at all common across the company's titles.

What we do know is that both games will be available exclusively via digital download later today. As soon as we know more, we'll be sure to update you.

They are thief.anyway ...look at FFFX S2E and Dragon Quest XI S2E, you have to repay both game at full price just for basic free screen option, nothing more...
10 euros the upgrade was sick but 50..what a madness....
Bandai Namco did great with the last Digimon when you can apply freely the switch 2 upgrade or not depending your actual console using the switch 1 physical version....This should be the example for any futur games ports or whatever...
SE did it only with FF tactics, the most ridiculous one visually (you barely see the difference and dont tell I reallly need a switch 2 for the 60 fps here) but none of their others games of course...

If there's no upgrade path, I'll just pirate the PC version, plain and simple. I'm not paying full price again for a game I already bought and barely played.
If you barely played it, then you would probably still barely play it anyway?

Will you actually play the pirated version?

Actually if you check the E-Shop for them, at least in my Region (Australia) There's a note saying there are no plans to sell an upgrade from switch 1 to Switch 2, so i guess that answers that question for me -.-

I won't be repurchasing, so i guess ill just wait for a good sale on the first on steam, already got the second recently from humble choice.

It is confirm that it's not just a patch but two specific version to (re)pay...
Available in japan now only, later in a GKC pack (amazing!)for them and coming the 1st october for the other country in digital format...

Who knows, I have a large backlog. Doesn't really matter to Squeenix whether I play it or not though. It's still a lost sale.
Is it a lost sale?

If there was an upgrade but it cost $20 would you buy it?

Seems sorta like no matter what you already aren't interested

No Upgrade Path Confirmed New
It's confirmed that there is no upgrade path for owners of the Switch 1 versions. Damn.

(others have posted it above but just doing it myself to add it as a threadmark)

I'd be less likely to play it if I knew what I had was the inferior version. And Switch 1 games are very rarely not inferior. I want to have the best version for if/when I eventually do decide to play it.

I am still somewhat interested, I just didn't really like the way the story was split between the characters and that caused me to drop off pretty quick. I'd rather just have one really good story than 8 of what felt like extended side quests. But I didn't get that far so I might change my mind. Probably after I get through some of the other JRPGs in my backlog though, I have a couple Bravely Defaults I haven't played yet.

Pirated it on switch one probably in 2018 and lost my save when I was about 80% finished. Bought them both on steam a while back and finally beat the first one. Working through ff8 before jumping into octopath 2. Really enjoy them though! It's super lame to not have an upgrade path. I was always just going to stick to steam, but this is a real spit in the face to the switch players

This is SquareEnix so this most definitely is not going to have an upgrade path. Afaik the only game they've released that has had one was FF Tactics. But Octopath 0 didnt have an upgrade path so.

I don't understand why some companies ignore making an upgrade path to some of their games. Sega especially. Hearing that Switch 1 owners of Sonic Frontiers not being able to get The Definitive Edition for Switch 2 is just upsetting to hear, especially since I own Sonic Frontiers on Switch 1 myself.

My running theory has just been the desire to have a Switch 2 Game Key Card. If they use Nintendo's official upgrade path they have to have the game on cartridge. They would still have the funky options open to them like we saw with Hogwarts Legacy, but I doubt many companies would want to have to explain things like that for a large number of games.

Nintendo made the "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" system for developers to make upgrade packs. But seemingly only Nintendo is using. Something tells me they expected it to be the answer all developers would go for.

Why are they so scared on having an option to have the game physical? Its so rare to see a third party opting to go through that, with me pretty much seeing only NIntendo's main games being Game Key Cards (with the Exception of Pokemon Pokopia, but I'd like to believe that The Pokemon Company is incredibly different from the main people that do Mario, Kirby, Yoshi, and Starfox.

To be fair it's not just Nintendo. Marvelous have used it for all of their games across both platforms as far as I know. SEGA did but only for Sonic Racing for some reason, then you have Trails in the Sky, Overcooked, Tamagotchi Plaza, and LolliPop Chainsaw to name a few off the top of my head.

Definitely not as many as could (or should honestly) be using it, but there are at least some out there.

That's what I'm seeing, too.

I see a lot of people complain about Game Key Cards, but I wished they complained about the other companies making the decision and not Nintendo
