Pokemon Platinum PC port gets a surprise release

platpc.jpg

Seemingly out of nowhere a PC port for Pokemon Platinum has surfaced online, bundled alongside the source code for those interested in building and developing it for themselves. The game in its current state appears to be fully playable with only minor graphical bugs noticed in my few minutes of playing, not requiring any kind of ROM or additional setup to get started.

The readme file in the source code download outlines a full list of features:

Feature List said:
  • Graphics
    • Internal resolution of the 3D graphics can be increased throught the config file. By default this is 10x.
    • A 60fps patch is enabled by default with some speed fixes, though some things will still be double speed
    • There may be some graphical issues with the 3D
    • Screen layout can be adjusted through the config file or IMGUI
  • Audio
  • Touchscreen (simulated with mouse)
  • Both the PC port and the NDS ROM can be built and debugged from the same source tree
  • Playing the game from start to finish
  • Poketch
  • Battle frontier
  • Contests
  • Debug features (this build by deafault has PM_DEBUG turned on)
  • IMGUI (press TAB)
  • Saving
    • The save file is just the raw data that would be written through SDK backup APIs, and is currently not compatible with emulators.
  • Local multiplayer over LAN or internet (press tab and select NET in the IMGUI)
    • Union Room
    • Underground
    • Local multiplayer is over port 2009. You can port forward or use a VPN like hamachi to play over the internet
  • Some WiFi features (WiFi plaza, WiFi club, GTS is only partially supported and has bugs)
    • Voice chat (libVCT) is NOT supported
    • By deafault, the Poke Classic DNS is used. You can go to the wifi settings from the main menu of the game to change to whatever DNS you want.
    • In my testing, I was able to trade and battle with a real DS using the WiFi club but it is very finnicky and can be difficult to get both devices to connect to each other

The port is available to download via Archive.org for both Windows and Linux users, though with me not being certain where it stands in terms of larger legality and it including all of the original game's assets, I won't be providing the link. In line with the site's rules, I'd ask people refrain from sharing or requesting such links in the comments below.

I just don't see things get taken down from archive.org, I think nintendo doesn't keep an eye on archive.org, maybe archive.org isn't a thing in japan ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is interesting stuff on there doesn't get taken down more often to be fair, you're not wrong. The random sites that pop up I can understand since it's not like they're likely to listen to a takedown request, but somewhere like Archive does seem very simple.

Let me ask you this: from your point of view, what's the difference between taking down a single item from a storage archive and taking down the whole archive?
my wording wasn't very good sry, I mean nintendo doesn't seem to care about archive.org as much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People can use this port to make a "clean" port, it's fine. The new code isn't Nintendo's.
What you are describing is by definition not a clean room port. A clean room port is a port where the developers weren't influenced by the leaked code and can prove it. Past port projects for games with leaked code have outright stated that you can't contribute if you have ever seen the leaked code. Whether or not you use it directly or not you may have been influenced by it, therefore endangering the entire project.

As demonstrated by earlier posts some of the code for this project is directly lifted from the leaked code.

Not "some of the code"... the whole thing, apart from the added compatibility stuff to make it work woth SDL, is the real (official) source code.
They're not decompiling or reimplementing the game, there already is a fan decomp - https://github.com/pret/pokeplatinum - I'm saying that someone is welcome to add the SDL stuff in the same places as this "anonymous" build.

But some people are so strict and "black and white", if people want to impose rules that you can't even add (new, additional) code to the fan decompilation, after having looked at the source code... lol if that helps thrm sleep at night, sure let them be. At least the fan decomp is open source so people can do what they want.
There's only so much time we each have on this planet, you might as well make life easy.

It comes with the source code, so feel free to contribute these features.
Is the source code for this specific game not Diamond or Pearl. Then again completing the Pokedex in that Gen was basically impossible without cheating because most rare Pokemon were fakes. Online trading that gen was such a mess I used cheats to fill the Pokedex instead.

I can't imagine anyone being willing to work on or improve this, being it's very clearly the leaked source code. Feels like a bomb waiting to go off for anyone working on it.

They really shoulda based on the Pret work, if they wanted to do something like this.

Well, since the source code is in hands, now one can make it possible to complete it on its own, without other games.

However, the dev said it that connectivity with a DS is possible, so one have this option as well.

is there tools getting made for this is the question I would like to know..
If it is, 100% it will not be disclosed here. The code is tainted after all, so the smart people won't say it in the open.

I hope people are archiving all of the files, I would love to see more ports from this

Drive has hit people’s files with DMCA notices, make sure you use more than just Drive to keep your files (especially these ones) safe
They do that on me, I’ll sue their ass. And cancel my membership. I’m already in the process of closing one of my Drives already and putting its contents on my external. A cloud drive is supposed to be private storage for my use. They want to violate that, I’ll sue them into oblivion and take action.
Drive doesn't check files against the blacklist until you generate a public link. So as long as you keep the files private, you should be good. Shared drives are pretty safe too as long as you only share them by granting other users access to the drive rather than sending links. That's how all the piracy gdrives have been getting away with it for so long.

I hope so. Because as I said, if they need to be shared, I’m not stupid enough to link directly to the drive. I’d just download it back to the computer and use another upload service.

Hopefully this is still true because this did happen recently

Since it looks like this is based on leaked source code, that's probably the start and the end of it... I can't imagine anyone seriously touching this source code.

You could say the exact same with the leaked source code itself, but someone made the port.
So, no surprises if someone builds upon the port.

I get it's "bad", but surprised so many users here actually care. Maybe I'm just a sinner who's going to hell :D

It's not "bad", it's BAD. This gets notoriety, and we end up with Nintendo and other companies having an actual case to go after actual, honest compilations. This is a fuck up, sticking it to the big bad company doesn't mean being a jackass is allowed.
