So I'm an older guy and my kids play the switch. They tend to play every 4 to 6 months and then let it sit for months on end.

So every time they go to play it, they can't. I then have to grab it and spend hours and hours trying to figure out what to do to get it working which usually ends up reinstalling all but to even do that takes me hours each time learning from scratch again. The error is usually fatal error of some sort when trying to do the jig and button thing (sorry useless with names can't remember what it's called)

Why is this constantly happening? Is it because the switch has a fw update and then the payload thingy is outdated? My fw is 20.4.0 so that doesn't appear to be the case? There is no way to auto update the payload stuff? (Again sorry about names, I haven't got a clue)

The payload is the same as long as you do not update hekate/atmosphere.
So unless there is a compelling reason, don't update hekate/atmosphere.

Fatal errors when starting games after you updated everything usually indicates you're a pirate, matey!
*harhar*
You need to update your sigpatches as well to make sure your can continue your pirate life.

Fatal error while playing games are usually related to other things like data corruption or hardware issues.

Someone released the following tool a few days back that is supposedly making your update efforts much easier.
I haven't tried it myself.
It does have English language support.
