Hi.

I was installing a 3dscapture capture card into a "New" Nintendo 3DS LL and I noticed at the very end that I broke off the latch for the touch screen ribbon.

I tried taping it in place, but that did not provide enough pressure (pressing the ribbon cable down with my finger enabled me to use the touchscreen). I tried putting a bunch of cotton pads on top of it, hoping the pressure from clamping the shell would transfer via cotton pads to the ribbon cable and enable the touch screen. It did not.

Then, I had a stroke of genius: "Just solder it on!" The ribbon cable melted...

Another stroke of genius: cut off the melted part. Now there are no exposed contants on the ribbon...

Any ideas of how to recover from this situation?

I guess I would need to replace the ribbon cable and get a replacement latch to put on. Where can I get those?

Maybe instead of getting a replacement ribbon cable I could somehow remove the coating to expose the contacts? Anyone know how/if that's possible?

Or should I just give up on this 3ds?

Are you not able to find the lost latch piece anywhere on your workbench or your floor? That would be good.
I don't think it's too easy to buy a replacement latch piece. You can try looking on Aliexpress or other Chinese shopping sites. But I haven't heard of others having much luck buying that piece.
If you do find that piece, re-attaching it is not too hard. I've described the process in one of my blog entries on this site, if you need additional help: https://gbatemp.net/blogs/rescuing-another-old-2ds.17523/

Regarding the ribbon cable itself, cutting the damaged part off and removing some of the coating might be an option, but I'm not sure how exactly you would do it. You could try with sandpaper.
In the worst case, if the ribbon cable is beyond repair, getting a new touchscreen digitizer is relatively easy and inexpensive.
Finding a place to buy the tiny plastic connector latch part was always much more trouble, from what I remember.

Unfortunately, I can't find it. Maybe I will try buying a broken 3ds to transplant a latch...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try sandpaper to remove the coating first. I will try that in the weekend though. I a bit busy right now.
Post automatically merged:

I lied. I couldn't wait until the weekend.

Sandpaper didn't work (or maybe it was too slow). Instead, I used a knife and scratched the coating off very slowly. The four wires were then exposed (they don't stick to the other side but were free to move individually). I didn't take a picture of it unfortunately.

I then spent who knows how long to try to put and align the exposed wires in the port and tape it in place. Surprisingly, that was enough to make it work.

Now that I look at the picture, it doesn't look like it's connected (maybe just the lighting), but I am not going to touch it anymore. Everything is working. I tried the touch screen in the game notes and didn't notice any problems.

Thanks again IC_!

Hello, congratulations on your successful repair!

Search for "ds 4pin" on AliExpress to find a matching base. Then you can try repairing it. Alternatively, you can remove the cover from the new base and install it on the old base, eliminating the need for soldering.
