The Neo Geo AES+ is a modern take on classic hardware with no emulation in the picture

The early 1990s were some of the greatest moments of innovations and games in video game history. Ever since the video game crash of 1983 and the release of the NES, video games started to reformulate into something that everyone can enjoy. In the arcades however? They were still booming with their cutting edge technology. Around the turn of the decade, SNK changed the game with the Neo Geo MVS and AES, arguably delivering some of the most authentic arcade experiences ever brought to the living room. Despite a premium MSRP of around $649 for the console and around $200 per game, the AES delivered on its promise, allowing fans to play the exact same MVS arcade software at home without compromise.

Fast forward to 2026, and with a collaboration project with PLAION Replai, a new system geared towards improving this system furthermore is born under the name Neo Geo AES+, a system that is a 1:1 hardware recreation of the original AES. No emulation or FPGA resources were used in the making of this, and it's set to launch on November 12th of 2026 with a price of $249.99. A special white Anniversary Edition will also be available for those willing to pay an additional $100, with you at least getting a Metal Slug cartridge for that price too. Rounding out the lineup is the Ultimate Edition, which includes the full launch lineup along with additional accessories, coming in at $999.99.

The system is set to launch alongside ten games:
  • Metal Slug
  • The King of Fighters 2002
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • Big Tournament Golf
  • Shock Troopers
  • Samurai Shodown V Special
  • Pulstar
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • Magician Lord
  • Over Top
Individual cartridges will be priced around $70 with more titles planned post-launch.

No emulation my ass. Unless it literally sends me back in time to those that, it will always be emulation.
It's literally an ASIC clone of the original console. You can't get much more not emulation than that. You can't even use the FPGA hardware emulation argument. It's literally burned into the silicon.

no quite true.

It is «Hardware emulation» is emulate the original hardware by «copying» the original one, so the software on the cartdriges is run on a approximation of the original hardware.

It is a type of emulation but at a level no differentiable.

Buy I am really pissed off because they are not using FPGA, so if they discover an error, you will be no able to correct it because the hardware is read onlu.

I understand that there are concerns about an ASIC system, but I would like to point out that the PS2's I/O processor was based on the PlayStation's CPU and was designed to guarantee full backwards compatibility with the PlayStation (almost complete); therefore, while it was not a completely faithful solution to the original (the other components were emulated), it was able to run old games faithfully (except in some cases), while with the AES+ the hardware reproduction is 100% faithful; so for now I don't worry, also because I imagine they will do some tests to make sure that everything is reproduced correctly; after all, the Neo Geo doesn't have a library that is particularly large (156 titles in total), and the games can be completed relatively quickly.

Jotego is an spanish engineer involved in the new Neo Geo AES+

On the 80's and 90's Spain was a big player on the games scene, most of the «japan» hits where developed and designed by Spain people.

Spanards are crazy about Neo Geo AES+

Never thought I would see that in my lifetime and once more, I'm too broke to get it haha! Nevertheless, I'm happy for those who can get it. It's a brilliant piece of history and this cross-compatibility is such a good idea. Even the price is somewhat right.
