Had another one. No luck with fuel gauge,

Disconnecting battery + plugging it back in gives battery charge symbol briefly, Nintendo Logo like it wants to boot, then black screen + 15V .5A

Last edited by needles,
unfortunately, i have removed CPU, and the short clears. think this generally means it's dead/bad cpu. perhaps not all destroyed, but certainly needs CPU reball/replacement. equally strange and disappointing.

Bit late now, but I've read reflowing /replacing the WiFi chip can help with a switch that boots to the logo and goes off?

I was able to finally fix one by replacing a series of components near the battery charging chip. I also had another one where it was other parts near Power Chip. I think it's completely random in every case. I got 2 of them going again. I wish i had a solid answer for people.

Same issue (15V 0.49A no power no display), but since the switch was a little bent I removed the motherboard and tried reflowing the RAM modules and It worked. I guess there were some soldering cracks and reflowing fixed it.

@needles, it's been a couple years and this still seems to be a common problem. Have you learned any new tricks on sourcing the issue?
It's pretty interesting to see this behavior when all the charging ICs seem to check out (no shorts, good resistance), but get super hot when plugging in, even without the battery.

Measured resistance a cap near the bq and it’s around 15k with this issue. Same symptoms above, bq is warm, constant .5A as soon as plugged in. Measured 1.5k on two other donor boards at the same cap. Not sure what to think of it since it’s not shorted, but sticks out to me when you said it was fixed by replacing comp.s near bq.
