Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

I am glad that I was able to get a PS5 Pro during Christmas $649.99 plus tax ain't bad compare to 899.99
Man, even for that price it seems too much for a gaming console.

People complained the original PS3 price was too expensive, yet they're willing to pay even more for a console.

PS6 at this point will likely be $/£/€1500. Insane price for a console.

I don't even buy a phone that expensive, I always try to get a deal out of everything if I can.

Rumours for the next xbox is at least $1000, although that may also be a PC ala Steam Machine.

I think if MS does manage to undercut Sony and it's an actual decent PC running full fat windows (and ideally an unlocked UEFI), they might actually stand a chance of a revival because it's not just a games console like with old 80s micro computers.

Although I suspect they'll mess it up somehow.

With inflation $599 becomes $971.

699.99 was the original retail price, but at that time they did raised the price by $50, so for Christmas they had it off for a $100, so ain't bad, 899.99 is a hard pill to swallow.

Expect Series S and X price to go up too.

Just give me PS4 tier graphics with a better CPU. PS4 games already look great and you can use FSR4/PSSR to upscale from 900p/1080p to 4K. With a better CPU (Jaguar cores are tablet tier) they could make more complex games still. Release the box dirt cheap subsidized by game sales. The game industry is far too preoccupied with numbers wars and inflating game budgets by hundreds of millions to make a game look slightly better.

(Wait this is just the Steam Deck. Lol.)

What 3 exclusive games? Interesting.
Like they can't run on any other PS5?
I think he meant PS5 exclusives in general. Some people will buy PS5 Pro just to play GTA6 at 60 FPS on launch, but at these prices it'll be a lot fewer people.

GTA V on a hacked PS4 Pro runs at 50~55fps and loads extremely quick (assuming you use an SSD) so I don't feel I'm losing anything.

Besides, it's GTA V. Tired of that game being milked to death.

"forget the stock trade and everything you did with the financial exams; buy PS5's."

"Why?"

"Oh, you'll see."

good thing my hackable phat disc version was only $249 on ebay, banned console. good investment :)

honestly you aren't missing anything. I have 3 ps4 pros and 1 hackable ps5, and one legit ps5. ps4 is more fun, more games, good enough titles. ps5 is kinda sub-par imho for what it offers versus a ps4 pro.

I'd hope so, considering it was originally a PS3 game. No doubt Rockstar plans to quadruple dip again with GTA6 across three console generations and PC. I have no problem waiting until it's down to $30 or less on Steam.

honestly... a PS5 is not worth 650 bucks and a ps5 pro for 900? LMFAO.

Personally, I'm just laughing at the fact that the PS5 overall has now had two increases in price before the Switch 2 has even seen one price increase (or a Lite/OLED/"Pro" version). And the second price increase is a USD $100-$150 one, no less (Portal's only a $50 increase, but nobody cares about the Portal). At this rate, the PS5 Pro will be USD $1,500+ (or the PS6 $2,000) before the Switch 2 even hits its second anniversary.

But no. Nintendo's the "greedy" one for doing the one thing people have been asking publishers (and Satoru Iwata) to do since the early 2010's when digital games were on the rise.

just look at the thread reaction. sad to surprise and angry last. The first comment blame "AI" (reasonably so). If it was Nintendo the angry will be first and the first comment will be "greedy Nintendo take advantage of AI situation to price gouging"

EDIT: https://gbatemp.net/threads/nintend...witch-and-other-accessories-in-the-us.673914/

Here it is, angry 2nd and 2nd comment said exactly what I said. Good enough I guess

Another hard pill to swallow is how few people here are capable of adjusting prices for inflation. As pointed out by others, that $899 is LOWER, not higher than the $699 of late 2006. I feel embarrassed for the Gamerboy Community™ every time I see a statement like this. I'll make this as simple as I possibly can: A dollar in the past was worth more than a dollar today. $699 of today's dollars are worth nearly one thousand 2005 dollars.

The only thing worse are the people who think it is just a greed move on the part of Sony, as if the price of the 2TB SSDs and GDDR6 haven't at least doubled since October.

OK? That's nice and all that my money is worth half what it used to but if my paycheck didn't double to match inflation than I effectively am still paying more. Even if "technically" I'm not.

I don't know why people cry about things when the solutions are in their hands. Don't buy or support these practices, these companies will sink under.

Stop paying premium for AI slops. If you absolutely need to use them, consider the free model. This way they will die faster because it's very expensive to run when they make no profit (look at Sora as an example).

Consider holding out on this gen, there's plenty of entertainment options.
