Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

i remember when consoles got cheaper during a generation
I was talking to a buddy about this today and I said the exact same thing to him. My buddy started telling me a story about him being at a bar and some guy was talking to an AI on his phone like it was his best friend.

I can't wait for this junk to implode. I'm glad I got a PS5 when I did. I'm wondering how long they'll push off PS6 because of this or how expensive it will be.

At these price points you might as well spend a bit more and get an entry level gaming PC. You can even get a decent gaming laptop for just a bit more. The Portal here is especially egregious considering it's just a streaming handheld without a ton of power and they're charging more than a Switch Lite. Absurd.

If you think these price rises are exclusive to Sony you're in for a shock. Things are only going to get worse from here .
Sure. But you can look at prebuilts and gaming laptops on Amazon right now. They're in the $900 range and are obviously full PCs not just gaming appliances.

Me thinks is to preempt a usd1000 dollar PS6.
Legitimately what would be the point? The entire point of consoles was to get you in at a cheaper subsidized price and be simple and easy. I wouldn't say Steam is particularly hard to use. If you're charging almost the same price as a PC why wouldn't I get a... PC that does more? And they don't even have a library of good exclusives to lure people in anymore. Thanks for going all in on GaaS Sony.

Thank heavens for blessing me with a PS5 Pro sold as refurbished (it was actually in brand new condition) and a disk drive, which cost me a total of €650.

I saw someone recently running Linux games off a jailbroken PS5 so honestly it's pretty nice as a PC if you can get one used or even for the current retail price.

Other than that, I'm happy I already have stuff to hold me over for the next couple years.

About a month ago I was digging through an old drawer and found a brand new Sandisk 128GB mSD, at the time I just thought 'nice'...now it's more 'oh thank God'.

To put it another way, my R36S handheld retro system cost me £22, to buy a (reputable) 128GB mSD now could cost more than the unit itself, fortunately I had a spare one lying around.
Well, guess it's a good thing I have so many and it's not because I bought them, they came with Switch consoles I bought (128GB, 256GB).
So the Portal becomes even more niche.
Even hacked it doesn't seem very useful.

Is the PS5 selling that well for them to get away with this price hike?
I feel this is beyond reasonable, in my opinion. Surely it's not only about that RAM panic going on. Probably there's some opportunistic "price adjustment" going on.

My OG PS5 was only £240 (~ $320/€275) and on Firmware 7.00, so seeing this, it was a very good investment. Plus, I've installed a 2TB SSD.

I just looked up the price of that NVMe SSD and it's £179 now, I bought it for £66 in 2024.

PS6 at this point will likely be $/£/€1500. Insane price for a console.

I don't even buy a phone that expensive, I always try to get a deal out of everything if I can.
Some people have the urge to get everything right away sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn't. At times I feel like I'd rather buy from a scalpers than get overcharged 3x the cost due to companies causing shortages.
