Pokemon Champions gets new overview trailer, launches April 8th

After it was previously announced that it would launch sometime in April, Pokemon Champions has had a new trailer looking at the game's systems and features. In the trailer we get a more in-depth look at how Pokemon are both acquired and trained, and how Victory Points are used in the game. We also see the abilities for Mega Meganium, Feraligatr, and Emboar for the first time, with Meganium and Feraligatr getting abilities that are new to the series in Mega Sol and Dragonize. Mega Sol will allow Mega Meganium to use moves as though Sunny Day is in effect, while Dragonize will change Normal-typed moves to Dragon type and boost their power by 20%. For fans of ROM hacks, both of these may sound familiar, with Chloroplast and Draconize from Elite Redux largely sharing these effects.

The game's release date was formally announced at the end of the trailer, with it set to launch on the 8th of April alongside a paid Starter Pack. This Starter Pack will offer increased box space, a trainer battle theme from the Let's Go games, 30 Teammate Tickets, and 50 Training Tickets. On the subsequent news post on the Pokemon website, it was also confirmed that the Switch 2 version will feature enhanced graphics.

So it's frrrrggggnnnn ONLINE-ONLY, otherwise bone-standard goddamn battle game sans single-player and the real kicker is that you gotta buy OTHER frrrggggnnnn games to harvest Pokes from?

Hahahahayeano.

Wasn't this the official alternative to Pokemon Showdown that they were announcing? I quite forgotten about this entry of Pokemon, actually. I don't know if I'm going to get this especially since I don't get to have all my pokemon on there and only what's allowed on there compared to Showdown, but I'm curious to know how the Pokemon Editorial Team members think of this one once it releases.

I am not one to make negative remarks on Nintendo games coming up since I just find it unnessasary unless it's actually poor. I mean, who even doesn't use Switch Online nowadays? Genuiely wondering this
Me. I. Haven't touched any multiplayer last year and not feeding em more money. And only acceptable alt to Showdown would have its key feature - access to a complete and instant editor across every gen of pokes and no grinding, paying extra etc etc.

So this is basically a modern pokemon stadium?
If so, cool. I heard PBR for wii wasn't amazing.

@Skv0ra you better not be right, is it really online only??

Don't make fun of him, that's just how he talks!
Don't you know who that is behind his keyboard.

It's all worded and in the fine print - like they say the devil is in the details! Nothing is ever truly free with Nintendo, especially when it requires ad constant internet connection.

You might want to give that another read, champ. There's nothing about a Nintendo Switch Online subscription being necessary. And it's an online game, why wouldn't it need a n internet connection. That's like crying you can't play an MMO without being online.

Maybe you can complain about a Home subscription being necessary, but that's for transferring your own Pokémon. This is the official alternative to Pokémon Showdown people have been asking for for years. I do think that's something that should be built into Home itself, but I'll take this.

This might be the only Pokémon game I'm excited for. Scarlet and Violet killed any hope I had for the series.

I miss Pokken

Eh they will charge for storage space and home needs a subscription fee.
If your not ultra into it then you don't have to spend anything just put up qith the limits.
The 3DS free to start games were like that though they did have a sort of maximum payment cut off that just unlocked everything so it's kinda like a shareware version in a way.
They do sorta hide the real cost which isnt great and fishy but eh it's atleast not the fomo battlepass microtransaction snot it coulda been.
Until theybadd it in anyway.

I might try it a few times, fransfer some home pokemon and then never touch it again so eh nothing good or bad just a thing.

Now if they made a battle league campaign or something substantial maybe I'd be more interested.

Oh heck yeah, sounds like a plan. Not sure when since I need some time to remember how to play properly and build up some Pokemon, but it’ll happen. Maybe a month or two after launch.

I don't get it - what's the point of Mega Sol? Meganium doesn't get any Fire-type moves (outside of Sunny Day), and the only Grass-type moves affected by harsh sunlight are Solar Beam and Solar Blade.

So...it only affects two moves. Great ability there 🙄. I would've given Mega Meganium Serene Grace or Pixilate or something.

As for Mega Feraligatr...Sheer Force would've been nice, boosting the power of most of his moves, not just to one STAB, especially since there's no reliable Return anymore (ugh, move Dexit has always been horrendous) to use Dragonise with.

In addition to the things that you listed, it also gets access to Weather Ball (base 50 normal type, but becomes base 100 *fire* type under sun) and synthesis for no-sleep 66% heals that would otherwise be 50%.

More importantly though, it gets all of these things regardless of and without changing the current weather condition on the field. In other words:
  • It gets all of these perks without buffing opposing fire types that would otherwise appreciate the sun
  • It can do all of this in rain, which would *weaken* said opposing fire types
  • Buffed solar beams can be used to check opposing water types that would take advantage of that same rain
Whether or not all of this makes it meta-defining remains to be seen. (Current consensus leans toward no, with MegaMega's base 80 speed being a big part of why.) Still, it's an interesting concept that's fun to see implemented outside of ROM hacks and fan games.

To make one more addition to this, Growth also gives two stages of Attack and Special Attack increase under harsh sunlight, meaning it would also, in theory, be affected by Mega Sol. I know this move isn't part of Meganium's moveset in any games up to Legends Z-A, but it's already been confirmed that Incineroar's losing access to Knock Off (unless they give it Knock Off after release - confirmation is from those who were invited by TPCI to try out Champions), so there's a chance that they'll give Meganium Growth in Champions.

Huh. I clearly didn't think of Synthesis, and I definitely didn't think of Weather Ball or Growth as I didn't remember Meganium getting those.
Welp, I'm wrong. Mega Sol is more useful than I thought.

Still, Dragonise...eeeeh. An uber-strong Giga Impact would be crazy, but for a spammable attack, Gatr doesn't really have much. Body Slam, I guess? Thrash > Outrage, for sure, if you don't mind being locked in + ending confusion. Double-Edge, if the recoil doesn't bother you. Regardless, it's still walled by Steel and nulled by Fairy, and doesn't do anything for his usual Water STAB, let alone coverage - unlike Sheer Force.

I did note that Meganium doesn't have Growth in the main series titles, but that could possibly change in Champions (much like with Incineroar losing access to Knock Off). As for Weather Ball, Meganium does get it as a TM move in Scarlet/Violet through the DLC, and might keep it in Champions due to the synergy with Mega Sol.

To be fair, the same could be argued regarding Mega Pinsir's Aerilate to some degrees. Even using its Z-A moveset at a base, there's not much Pinsir has that's better than just running Dual Wingbeat, and Aerilate doesn't do much for Pinsir's natural Bug STAB or coverage (in fact, it covers as much as any other Bug/Flying Pokemon).

As for the "doesn't do anything for his usual Water STAB" argument, the "-ilate/-erate" abilities don't particularly do much for a Pokemon's natural STAB, unless the ability targets the natural type and the Pokemon have Normal moves that are better than moves that are naturally of the same type, such as in the case of Sylveon with Pixilate + Hyper Voice*. But Mega Feraligatr itself doesn't get very many options to properly utilize its additional typing naturally in the first place, so Dragonize gives it more options.

Fun fact: if its Mega Evolution had Sheer Power instead, then Breaking Swipe would become a 78 Power move (so 117 Power after factoring in STAB), but would lose the Attack drop (since Sheer Power negates secondary effects). Pretty sure Feraligatr would have better options for AoEs at that point, like 130 Power Earthquake. Dragonize at least gives Feraligatr the option running Breaking Swipe in Doubles to weaken the opposing team, alongside Body Slam or Double Edge for heavier targeted blows against Pokemon that resist Water.

*Honestly one of the most OP ability + move combinations in Pokemon history (most OP would be Pixilate + Hyper Beam if it weren't for the recharge turn). It out-damages both Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam, AND hits both opponents, AND HITS THROUGH SUBSTITUTE. So you'd only run Moonblast or Dazzling Gleam for the times when Hyper Voice is either blocked by Soundproof (or reduced by Punk Rock, which doesn't matter since you're not keeping Sylveon around if Toxtricity shows up without you having a Ground move to hard counter it) or disabled by Throat Chop, neither of which come up too often.

I'm very confused why anyone is surprised that the thing that was always presented as an online battle simulator requires a network connection.

Oh, most of them are just looking for anything they can use to paint Nintendo and Pokemon in a negative light. I'm not a blind fanboy like some people (I've had my share of criticism towards things that could be improved, and I along with others did not like the random tripping in Smash Brawl), but even I get annoyed by some of the stupidity present in the grifting and discourse.

Those few who are genuinely surprised that an online battle simulator needs an internet connection, though? With even Pokemon Showdown requiring having an internet browser and a network connection this whole time? Yeah, they're just dumb. Not much we can do about them.
