Hi Guys!

Bought an OLED today.

I've been and will only play handheld, no docking ever and the general advice was to go for OLED over lite anyways for handheld use. But after logging in a couple of hours of Tears of Kingdom I just can't understand how can you hold this device comfortably. In 30 seconds my hands start to cramp due to weight and awkward holding angle- its like holding a pane of glass. My use case only consists of lying in bed or sitting while playing and I find myself unimpressed. Yes the screen is gorgeous but I can't focus on that while my hands and arms even my shoulders are in discomfort. I am writing this from the comfort of my PC while my hands are still aching.

So my question is this: Is lite really more comfortable? I can sell this for the price I bought since it was secondhand no problem and get a cheaper lite. Would you recommend that? Again will only be playing handheld lying down or sitting. I have a gaming PC so nintendo switch would be only for smaller games when I am away from home or just want to lie down and relax. If I want to play a AAA game I will do so on my PC anyways.

Also asked about on reddit and I apologize if this isn't the forum to ask about but I am a bit disappointed in nintendo, last device of theirs I played on was a ds lite with an r4 card as a kid so I thought that a chipped OLED would be the way to go as a more modern device, but maybe lite is instead.
I love my lite. I Don't care about oled screen.
With a very cheap silcone cover i have no problems in longer gaming session.

I also have a switch 2, but i totally prefer my lite!

I have the Switch Lite. I don't want a device a portable gaming device much bigger than this. It feels 'just right', size-wise.

I personally do not like to use wireless (bluetooth) joycons, for health & other reasons, but I won't go into that here unless you want to know more. No reason for me to disconnect & use them wirelessly unless a game forces it on me. Switch Lite is a very solid-feeling, not-too-big device. If you don't count Nintendo's crappy failing sticks (which is the same in the OLED model), it just feels solid.

smaller screen (5.5 inch versus 7 inch)
If screen size doesn't bother you in general gaming, reading fine text in games might. I had an issue reading small text until I discovered this:
https://en-americas-support.nintend...id/44641/~/how-to-use-zoom-on-nintendo-switch I had the same problem on the Sony Vita until (finally) discovering a similar zoom 'shortcut' feature.

OLED
I find most OLED screens oversaturated, unnatural & dumb, even though they do have deeper blacks, which is nice. However, I don't value this that much. I also have longevity concerns about OLED, which - as far as I'm aware - they still haven't 100% solved. I much prefer the non-OLED Vita than the OLED Vita, for example.

So the choice you make depends on your priorities. I find the Switch Lite screen just fine, and I personally don't like portables that are too 'jumbo', but everyone is different.
I want to learn more about the health aspect you mentioned if you have time. Because I never thought of that and now that you mentioned it won't get out of my head. I am the kind of person who still prefers a mouse with cable but for some reason joycons wireless-bluetooth aspect went right over my head, didn't even consider that when buying...

Will buying third party joy con like split pad pro which works only while attached eliminate the issue you mentioned?

The OLED is the best model of all, in fact, I have the Zelda TotK and it looks so nice I just have it for display. But damn, the picture quality is vastly superior than V1/V2/Lite and even NS2.

I wouldn't use NS1 JC, to be honest, instead Hori Split Pro Pad or CRKD GCN Pad because I just don't like it at all. Fine for display, of course.

HORI SPP

CRKD GCN

P.S. NS2 JCs are really good so Nintendo learned from their mistakes.
split pad pros are on discount so I might go for that. Don'T care that they don't have rumble, in my short experience with OLED I actually didn't like rumble lol

The SPP really feels like a traditional controller, but yes, no rumble (while I don't mind, I do wish it had).

Hori released different designs, the Sonic pads are pretty cool. Or just the black ones.

Grip is not optional IMO. Makes such a huge difference to usability, whether it's the OG, Lite, OLED or Switch 2. It's not even the weight that tends to be a problem for me but the shape, there's nothing for my hands to grip onto on a slab. I find it most comfortable to play leaned back, I can't find a comfortable position to play sitting straight up or in bed.

With skull co grip was still feeling heavy so I realized no amount of grip comfort will fix the weight issue for me. Sold it, got a lite and got it chipped I couldn't be happier :) I have big hands by the way so lite should feel uncomfy in theory but it turns out my problem was not hand positioning it was just the weight becuase even with no grip I have no problems with lite at all. Lessons learned, a device objectively deemed best might not be suitable for you sometimes so you gotto pick what is right for you as the comment above said :)

I play anything big on PC anyways so this solution worked best for me. Gotto say I knew it was smaller but I thought surely wouldn't be a big difference in sizes but lite offfers insane portability with compared to OLED! It takes up no space in the bag at all which was important for me so yeah shoul've went for lite in the begining but hey at least I tried otherwise I would have wondered if I should have picked up OLED all the time, would nag myself wondering.

I have all models, and for big hands they all have terrible grip. For switch lite I have a grip, perfect portable for light gaming. Regular switches for my kids and OLED for me and my wife. Get the best controller for switch, Mobapad M6 HD. They have clicky buttons, hall effect sticks, original HD rumble and NFC. I got them and you can't imagine how they did improve my gaming sessions, they're sooooo comfortable. I did also try nitro deck, that thing is absolutely awful, it's like holding a brick.

It's known that Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about ergonomics or accessibility. This goes back to their block shaped NES controllers. They are the opposite of their peers that take ergonomics and accessibility very seriously. Don't expect them to change anytime soon.

Agreed.

NES, SNES, GCN, Wii Classic/Pro Controller, Wii U Pro Controller, Switch Pro Controller they're all very comfortable to me.

Not so much Switch 1 Joy-Cons, but the Switch 2 Joy-Cons are great.

GameCube controller is almost an anomaly looking at what they released over the years. Also, Switch Pro is a copy of the XBOX controller, but I won't knock them for doing that.

Dual Shock set the standards what an ergonomic controllers should look like.

NES and SNES controllers are outliers, most of their controllers were quite comfortable, even the N64 controller. The Wii Classic Controller wasn't great because the shape was based on the SNES controller but they later fixed it with the Classic Controller Pro. I also found the Wii U gamepad very comfortable, despite being quite large.
Their handhelds on the other hand have never had great ergonomics. All of them are some variation of brick or flat slab. And that includes the Switch. The best of the bunch as far as ergonomics go is probably the original GBA, it may not have had grips but at least it had hand shaped curves. The original DS was a step down but was at least somewhat curved with enough chonk to hold onto. I think it started with the DS Lite where I really started having ergonomics issues with their handhelds where my hands would cramp up, and they've been like that ever since.

Sell it and get a steam deck. Depends on what games you're interested in but it's got the best ergonomics and I have big hands.

Yes and no. It is a copy, but unfortunately it has digital triggers.

Not counting the GCN controller which has analog triggers, the other Nintendo controller with analog triggers was the Wii Classic Controller (the Pro has digital).

While I don't mind DualShock controllers they're not as comfortable to me as the Nintendo/Xbox controller layout are.

Even the PS Edition Backbone has the analog stick on the top left than at the bottom. Love it.

You can use adapters to get a real dualsense or a DS4 working easily with a switch, no modding needed. Another option is simply one of the 8bitdo pro controllers that feel like what playstation controllers should be.

Yes, a 8Bitdo USB Wireless Adapter 2 or a Ralan R100 and it syncs with a PS controller.

(I misread, oopsː) For handheld-only play, I see nothing wrong staying with the Lite. The bulk of Switch 1/OLED only really adds up to more versatility... including easily replaceable controls... but other than that, lighter is better.

I don't know about you, but unless a screen is genuinely terrible (which isn't the case for Switch), I have no problems using it. OLED or IPS, outside of direct comparisons, really don't make a huge difference for me. Vibrance is a matter of calibration (unfortunately requires CFW), and the loss in contrast isn't a big sacrifice if you play in a well-lit space and get used to the backlight in dark scenes. Just my two cents.

Edit: I re-read the OP, I originally misread and thought you came from Lite. Yeah, as pointed out previously, I think you'd be best served with a grip more so than getting another Switch. The ergonomics are bad, but can get used to with some effort.

I have tendinitis and both weight and form factor were absolutely crucial in making my choice. I studied and I studied. I settled for the Lite. 98% of my playtime is portable, and while I may miss some things, I don't think I've regretted it. Every time I tried to play the v1 Switch I found it cumbersome.

You may want to check out Fizeau to give some games an oomph on the screen and colour saturation. Makes it look much better.

Laughs in Switch Lite with better OLED screen + hdmi out.

I do like the lite more for portable use but I do miss rumble sometimes. The OLED screen is also much better than the Switch OLED in terms of color but the mod has a lot of dumb compromises.
