All incentives are gone. Stores are dropping Xbox products. Prices are being constantly inflated by Microsoft. Not even Gamepass is worth it anymore. All previously exclusive IPs are being auctioned off to competitors.

Why does Xbox STILL intend to keep the brand alive? Genuinely, what do they get out of it? Xbox Series X/S have been the lowest selling console out of the "big three". Literally no one wants the $1k rebranded Asus ROG Ally.

So, why is Microsoft still delaying it and not releasing the big announcement that Xbox's gone? Why let it circle the drain until it goes into the sewers?

They're even going to include Windows in the next Xbox lol I guess just consider it a cheaper PC (if it's not $1,000, which wouldn't surprise me if it was).

If you're Microsoft you have more money than some countries do though, they don't have to care if they're losing money.

The theory I'm going with right now (posed by other users) is that Microsoft wants to position Xbox as a luxury brand. So, the Xbox Game Pass and ROG Xbox Ally are going to be a sort of "premium way to play." Windows itself is a larger focus because it has better marketshare in places like Japan, which is a country the Xbox brand struggled with. Microsoft is going to focus on consoles by going third-party, and the Halo remake worked as a confirmation of this strategy, since it's coming to the PS5.

In my opinion, Microsoft started cannibalizing the brand around the time the Xbox One was announced as "digital only." They had earned a lot of goodwill in the industry through the OG Xbox and 360, but poor decision-making eroded the Xbox brand.

I think the buying (and closing) of studios were part of Microsoft trying to remain competitive, but spending money without gaining marketshare finally caught up to the entire division shortly thereafter.

Making all their services, consoles, and even dev kits more expensive will eventually encourage everyone to abandon the current state of Xbox. Once this generation ends, we'll see the full implementation of this new strategy.

Because they want to milk the current user base.

I think Ms will slowly kill the rest of the brand and just change the name to the current Microsoft Studios.

The nail in the coffin will be the next ""console"". If its just windows 11 with a game launcher, it will flop hard.
Sure there will be some who buy it, but I don't think they will sell enough units to justify continuing in the hardware market.

Basically they will pull a Nokia / Lumia again. They were great windows based phones but because it did not sell as good as MS management wanted , they just pull the plug ( and they were selling, just not in the volumes some executive wanted) .

I'm a 20+ Xbox consumer and I'm now saving money to either buy the next playstation (if its any good) or a Switch 2 when the OLED model comes out.

Probably Windows 12 it's only a year or two away they never quit trying to force a new OS on us I'm still on 10.

Simple. Want three? Rebrand to XXXbox!

My guess is that there are contracts prohibiting them from pulling the rug out from under publishers. It feels like they don't want existing Xbox owners to stop buying Xbox games.

I would love to speculate on Sony's next moves. According to VGChartz, the PS5 is the 12th best selling console, so I'm concerned Sony may just continue on their current path. You know, release the PS6, make a console exclusive or two, port half/most of their games to PC, and coast.

I don't foresee another console from Microsoft. If they were concerned about marketshare, they wouldn't have allowed brick & mortar storefronts to strip the Xbox sections. Even if Microsoft did release a digital only "PC in a box" console, I'm sure the ROG Xbox Ally would have HDMI out. So, it'd just be redundant. Sony could see it as an opportunity, but I'm not convinced they'd take the next step.

I would really like to see Sony fight for dominance. They could make a new Ape Escape, they could remake Syphon Filter or even Jak & Daxter, they could even try to revive PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. They could iterate on Astro Bot, or they could develop some new IP's. After the glory days of the PS1 and PS2, it's been sad to see the creative decline.

TL;DR: Sony doesn't try, and it's frustrating.

Xbox isn't gone, Xbox made by Microsoft is on it's way out. Asus seems to be the one to continue with the brand.

Yeah, Microsoft recruited Asus because they were already producing the ROG Ally handhelds. Since the Xbox brand has been in decline for the last few gens, it made sense not to spend the R&D making a handheld themselves.

Since brick & mortar stores stopped selling Xbox games, I think it's fair to expect Microsoft to sit out the next console gen. Instead, they'll likely focus on Windows, publishing games, and marketing their Steam Deck competitor alongside the Xbox Game Pass. (Is the Xbox Game Pass being retired?)

To date, I maintain that i still want a Series X entirely for the backwards compatibility. Because at least since the XBO generation, there just hasn't been anything that's commanded my attention I'd want a newer console for. IF the series X were designed to work from and accept off the shelf NVMe storage, I literally wouldn't have a reason to even look at a PS5 for anything. Sony already pissed away any loyalty I had to them in the PS3 era and their move to drop BC as of the PS4 was just a steamroller over the coffin as a result.

Ideologically, it is painful to see the dissolution from within for the Xbox brand. Ergonomically, I like their controllers more than sony's. In terms of repairability, the Xbox(es) have been orders of magnitude more accessible for putting in work and finding parts than ANY playstation. All the more reason to hate this push for chatGPT bullshit.

It makes sense to go third party because Sony fans are going to buy PlayStation's no matter what. So going third party is free money. Selling hardware still makes sense too though, you get to keep 100% of the game sale for your own games and 30% of all other games. If they can make the next xbox work like a PC then MS is golden.

I might want to buy an Xbox PC — let’s see how it turns out. Having a single target that’s consistently optimized by game developers is a good thing.

Well consoles were getting more PC like gen by gen, xbox especially with their UWP support and whatnot. Funny how you can emulate PS1 or 2 on xbox no prob, and on ps5... not so much

You can emulate PS1/2 on PS4 but so far PS5 hasn't been hacked to be able to run emulators at all, I wonder if that will change one day.

Edit: I guess if you have an old PS5 on low enough firmware to play backups you can run Retroarch from what I'm seeing but not sure if it supports PS1/PS2 yet or if it will.

my first smart phone was a nokia lumia 928

xbox and microsoft have already said they are making the next console and that it's going to basically be an "xbox pc"

there's no doubt at all that the next set of consoles, xbox and ps6, are going to be priced between $1,000 and $1,500

series x is $650
rog ally is $1,000
ps5 is $600
ps5 pro is $750
ps5 digital is $500
portal is $200
ps5 vr is $400
