Sony has delisted Horizon Zero Dawn for PC, with remaster now requiring PSN account to play

header (1).jpg

A little under four years after its PC port, and PlayStation has delisted Horizon Zero Dawn. That's because Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will soon take its place, with the original game now unavailable to purchase on either Steam or the Epic Games Store. The upcoming remaster of the game will be out on October 31st, meaning those who didn't grab the game before it left digital storefronts won't have long to wait, however, the new release will feature a mandatory PlayStation Network account requirement--something that the original did not. This has been a controversial sticking point for most of PlayStation's PC ports, with most of their library, including single-player titles such as God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn needing players to have a PSN account to link, even if they're only interested in playing on PC.

For those that live in countries where they're unable to create a PSN account, or want to have an offline copy of the game, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition is still being sold on GOG.

Look what I bought the other day:

It was $20 sealed at my local used game store. Figured I'd buy it with all the digital fuckery going on surrounding this game. I have the free copy from PSN monthly, but we all know those won't last forever and that we own nothing digitally.

Exactly this.
I immediately got the 3DS cartridge of Tetris Ultimate when I found out it was de listed back in 2019.

I also found out that Skylar and Plux was de listed. Stupid digital games. Licensing issues my a#s. Developers take years to create a game just to get delisted and in the worst case even within a year. It's pathetic.

Now it's time to get all the physical games that are delisted from digital storefronts.

Digital only games that are delisted are lost forever... (by official means intended by developers)

....no I meant, why would they leave it available to buy on GOG

Besides what Leen mentioned, the othe possibility is that they are still able to harvest our data through the GOG version even without needing a PSN account. The reviews there mentioned that the GOG copy also has mandatory data collection, the only options are full or limited data collection, no opting out completely.

According to one reviewer, the description of the data collection is as follows:

Information about the device you are using, any connected peripherals (such as controllers and VR headsets) and how you have configured them Information about how you use the software installed on your device (which may include information about the use of the software offline), such as date and time of use, what games or music you play, what content you browse, share or download, what services you access and for how long, including how often you use chat and other communication applications

So they would still be able to harvest from their GOG users, unless they unplug their internet while playing.

Download & install GOG version, then block the game in the Firewall is what I did. Easy, no need to unplug your Ethernet cable lol, there are far more effective solutions than that (Manually create a Firewall rule, or have a program like GlassWire do it automatically for you when you click to Block it like I do) :creep:

And the game is on GOG because when you sell a game on GOG, then it has a strict list of demands to follow, amongst which is that you cannot pull it within a period of time. Eventually Sony can (and definitely will) remove HZD from GOG, but since it released onto GOG just recently, they have a certain contractual obligation to keep selling it there until either GOG decides to pull it themselves out of courtesy, or Sony can legally do so due to the timelimit having run out.

So Sony:
- Made a Remaster for a game that didn't need it, which doesnt even look that much better than the original
- Realized people will just buy the cheaper old one that looks just as good, so they raised its price so people wouldn't buy it
- Delisted the old one so newcomers would be forced to purchase the new one, that incidentally also now requires a PSN acct., effectively locking out people in certain regions from even buying it anymore

Did I miss anything?
yes....atleast i would say.....FUCK SONY

Funny enough I stay away from remasters for a number of reasons, so whatever little thought I could've given to buying a cheap Playstation port has now gone out the window.

The OG way is the true way unless the remaster is warranted, done well, and worth replaying whatever it was.

Yet another example of "Consumers need to cater to us, not the other way around." Or, better yet, "The customer isn't always right."

Meh; I'd rather play modded games and indies at this point in my life, anyway.

That time where Microsoft tried making the first XBOX One always-online really is an incident they never recovered from, and that's almost a decade ago at this point.

Sony sadly doesn't have the brightest minds at the helm either at the moment, and they seem to be mighty interested in heading where Microsoft sunk their ship almost a decade ago. Let's see what treasures they'll find over at XBOX's graveyard (or business-fatal diseases, rather).
Wasn't that also the time where M$ was like "you can't sell your physical games either because they will be bound to your account!" ? I think they changed their decission in the end but the initial shock surely helped at least some part of players to see the colors M$ uses, greed and then some more greed.

Why? So peoples feelings don't get hurt? It's 100% free to create a PSN account. The only ones that should be complaining are those that are unable to create one and were actually going to buy the game. Which brings up another point. It's extremely amusing how so many people that didn't give a rats ass about the remaster and were never going to buy or play it... seem to care an awful lot that there is the PSN account requirement. Funny how that works.

Think about this piece of wisdom.

In a strange case that it would refuse to run at all with network blocked I think GOG should get a note that one of the games, pointed by title, is breaking the basic rule of GOG which is FCKDRM by having a DRM, internet connection requirement.

You know, it's funny. The moment I saw that the remaster would have a PSN requirement, I knew this was going to happen. Almost like we've seen stuff like this before from another company that was concerned that their "remasters" would be skipped in favor of the originals because of deliberate decisions that weaken the experience.
….b-b-b-but it’s just another login, what’s the problem guys???

The modern day consumer is to blame for Sony being so confident as to blatantly screw over the PC gaming community.
Well, they're half-right. It is just another login. Another login made with the purpose of gathering your information to sell to third parties or tell investors that the one gathering your data is still worth investing in.

Still remember that line spoken by Alucard in SotN, and it still holds true today.
Your interpretation of the piece of wisdom works, too.

That’s what bothers me.. they’re already charging extortionate prices for these re-releases. Until Dawn, anyone? Now they “require” an email address just to play a single player game for the sake of making more money in a rather passive manner. It’s messed up and why I haven’t bought many games released within the last few years. The game companies have become too comfortable and the consumer has become complacent.

Wow! I already have Horizon Zero Dawn game for my PS4 for about $15 dollars long time ago for on sale.

Now I see Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster price is higher right now. That's very dumb move. Do not buy it unless price go down around $10 - $15 in near future.

I feel about buying and buying more games make me feel not enough and get bored very faster. Pirate is best ever to save our money. Pirate don't make me excite, but nothing feeling inside me. Pirate game feel same to legal buy to me. Save our money for buy more SSD and more HDD to store tons of games on them. Smart move on. Amen. B-) :yay:

I think I have heard the version I have quoted somewhere else, probably an (un)intended reference to SotN.
Nevertheless, both quotes hold the truth and wisdom indeed.
SotN wins an extra 🏆 for being the first one to say it however.
