The Little Mermaid. Is it getting flak because of racism, or because it's yet another remake?

How does your status as a "minority" factor into any of this?
I believe it factors as it can help me relate - black people support films where they're represented, people from my communities support films where we're represented. It's mostly just nice to know that there are others like us out there, with similar experiences that may not align with the mainstream.

I disagree. I get the sense that you WANT to be included in a protected class. I just get the feeling that being a victim comes naturally to you.

Your experience is NOTHING like that of a black person in America, and it's insulting and arrogant for you to think so. The level of conceit to elevate yourself and your personal "suffering" to that of an entire ethnic group of people... it's almost mind-bogglling.

Good day, sir.

I know my experiences aren't the same as an African-American's, they're nothing alike!
I'm talking minority groups in general (race, disability, etc). I belong to some, I know people who belong to some, I follow people online who belong to some. Generally from what I've seen, minority groups like to see themselves represented in media. That is the only point I'm trying to make here.

Good day.

Do countries in the African continent make films with white people or asians in them to represent the white people and asians?
Do India or Asian countries make films with white and black people to represent the white and black people?
Does China make films with white people or other races to represent them?

The Answer is NO, they just make films - usually with a hero, a villian, a beautiful woman and use the same sort of plots that every other film makes.

Pretty much only USA cares or makes movies based on diversity quotas and woke propoganda - Go figure!

At the end of the day, people just want to be entertained, NOT lectured to and they certainly don't want to watch political bias crap and woke crap - hence the low ratings and box office takings for many of these "woke" movies and TV shows that USA is pumping out nowadays.

I feel bad for anyone who thinks that skin color representation is important. I think skin color is the least interesting thing about a person. Ethnicity? Who cares?

Who has EVER cared, except for RACIST PEOPLE?

Ethnicity does not matter. Skin color does not matter. I refuse to believe it does. It adds nothing to a person's character or personality. It is not a benefit or a detriment to anything. Skin color is absolutely irrelevant, and if the way someone looks is how you feel "represented", you might want to be less shallow.

Look deeper than the skin and the outward appearance. I feel represented by people whose ACTIONS and CULTURE and CHARACTER reflect my own virtues and morals. That is what is important. Virtues, morals, character, action.

Not MELANIN. Not ETHNICITY.

Abort thread, dumpster fire detected, recommend quarantining it in politics forum.
I wouldn't call it a dumspter fire just yet. Not one person has attacked anyone else. I haven't seen a single rule broken so far.

Let it ride, baby. This is good for us. The only time we stop growing is when we stop exchanging ideas.

If that personal shit you said about that other user isn't an attack, then neither is me calling you a godawful bigot. Enjoy your dumpster fire, I'm out.

Please show me where I have ever attacked anyone on this entire site. Please do not make false accusations.

Not once have I attacked a single person here. Disagreeing with someone is not a personal attack.

You injure me, sir.

I wouldn't worry about that dude calling you names, he calls everyone names that doesn't share his narrow world view - that's a fascists mentality for you.

Nah, he's cool. We've never exchanged a single harsh word. I don't understand why he is mad at me.

I didn't attack anyone.

You might not have attacked anyone but @hippy dave has form for it, I can link a few posts where he goes off his rocker and starts calling people all sorts of names when he doesn't like what they post. You should just add him to your ignore list like I have done as he is unhinged and not worth the time to reply to. Usually he acts out if he misses his meds or has overdosed on soy milk or underdosed on his estrogen tablets.

Oh no the openly transphobic piece of shit doesn't like me :rofl2:
I feel like in the six days it took you to write that post you could have done better. C minus.

The movie is garbage, period. No amount of white redhead would have fixed this pile of shit.
The only reason they casted a black actress is to use her as a shield against criticism.
You can't criticize this movie or you'll be labeled a "racist". And this same thread is proof of it.

Consider the following: Beauty and the Beast live action remake got the same amount of hatred yet the main character was white, however everyone loved the original Aladin yet he was arab (non-white), and everyone loved the original Pocahontas yet she wasn't white.

Whoever says that this movie is a flop because of racism is just playing into the corporate game. Big Corpo found a glitch in the matrix to keep pumping out crappy products and call you a "racist" if you don't like it. Black people are being used as literal human shields for these corporations. Now THAT is racism.

Even funnier the second time, congrats. About an original as when you reverse engineered other people's work.
Haha, I'd ask if if was "that time of the month again" but as Aunt Flo can't happen to you I'm putting if down to you probably took the wrong hormone dose, or the drugs you're on have been spiked yet again. Maybe you should try a different dealer.

Live-action remakes just aren't compelling to me. There's nothing new, no new plot, no new ideas, just a rehashed CGI-heavy flick from thirty years ago. Speaking as a white neurodiverse male, I'm a little tired of Disney's 'inclusivity' in their movies--it feels shoehorned, forced, and not very natural. Little Mermaid is a tale rooted in sexism and other outdated beliefs, but most people these days can look past that. However, if you try to tell the same story but yank out anything offensive, it could inadvertently sabotage the movie as a whole.

As a small example (I have not seen the remake) one of Ursula's primary swaying points to get Ariel to take the deal in the original is to be "withdrawn" and ladylike. In the concept of deceptiveness, this makes sense, but if you take that out without changing the goal (Ursula getting Arial to sign the contract) it could be difficult to convey with the same level of gusto.

Does that make sense?
