What do you mean old 1.16 and new 1.16? As far as I know there's only been 1 official 1.16.

He's right. My original has a datestamp of 29 Oct 23:48, the new one is 30 Oct 0:48.
And running a simple (command prompt) FC /B against them confirms they are different.

Sadly, my month-old fake (DX) has been insanely erratic since putting the original 1.16 in.
It may just be coincidence, but it froze up about 10 minutes after installing 1.16, and now
usually locks up within a few seconds after the Nintendo welcome splash -- reverting to 1.15
hasn't helped. Once I get it to boot, it seems to work fine. Guess I'll give this a try, nothing
to lose at this point.

I didn't even realize that they'd re-released 1.16, cheers for the info OP.

If you bought from DX do not try 1.16 software, stick to 1.15.

Use the dstt advance 1.16a instead if you must have the 1 rom fix it brings. Though it could still contain the fake killing software if it was directly stolen from the real ndstt team... shrugs, i don't know

Mines definitely not a fake so I'll probably be alright. If it does screw the card up I'll get hold of the DSTT team. Nightmare about yours though, my sympathies go out to you. Send a scathing email to DX, you might be able to get replacements. Did yours come in a box or the plastic casing?

Maybe rasputin just got some bad DSTT's (there have been reports of those lately). Also, I was under the impression that the fake killer code would destroy your microSD card as well. Has anyone else actually confirmed that the latest firmware contains the fake killer code?

Strange, I just bought a dstt from dealextreme but it seems like a real one because,

1: i unknowingly grabbed this "new" 1.16 .dat, but it hasn't caused me problems (yet), and

2: it doesn't have the gold dots on that edge of the board in the micro sd slot. Is that still an indicator?

The cart itself though looks like a fake because it came in the cardboard box and not the blister pack, and the cart looks like the fake on the official website.

2. gold dots are no longer an indicator, the more recent fakes don't have it, you can only really know by ripping the cart apart.

My advice is use 1.15 software instead, just in case. 1.16 only has one crappy japan rom fix anyway.

So the fake-killer has arrived? :'(

I think I have the good version, but I can't be sure since I will not open it.

If I'm not mistaken, it was the version of 1.16 that was out on the first day it released which someone claimed destroyed their fake cart. Apparently, the firmware was replaced with a modified version the next day. I can confirm that the two versions are indeed different (I have both and doing a binary compare on the files shows that they are different) but I don't know if the first one really had fake-killer firmware in it.

The best advice I can give about the DSTT, is never to buy them from Dealextreme because the are selling fakes and claiming that they are legit.

Dealextreme nearly always labels their carts as clones when they sell fakes. You can see several DSTT clones on their site that are clearly marked that way. When people have received fakes when they thought they were buying a real one, has usually been an honest misake by Dealextreme (generally because a supplier sold them fakes and didn't tell them they weren't real), and they will generally pay return shipping and exchange it for a real one.
