New Skyrim version for Switch, first Nintendo game for $70

Did you wish for yet another version for a 10+ years old game?
Well, whether you did or not, you're gonna get it... again.

But this time, there's a little caveat.
While the Anniversary Edition seems to offer almost every add-on available for Skyrim in a single package, alongside some new Creation Club content, the price tag for the new version becomes the very first Nintendo game to be offered at a full price tag of $70 and, according to Nintendo's site, seems to be a digital only release at the moment of writing.

While users can still purchase the previous version of Skyrim on Switch for $60 (which hasn't lowered in price since release), the new exclusive Anniversary Edition currently sits at the new full $70 dollars price tag.
It is currently unknown if other devs, or if even Nintendo themselves, will start releasing games for this new full price of $70 for Nintendo or other consoles going forward, but most likely this will be an inevitable event to unfold in the near future.

Fun fact, many N64 games originally retailed for $70, and a few at $80

This was mostly due to overhead from the price of manufacturing the cartridges

70USD or the price of SM64 on launch day would be about $130 today

I'd imagine it would be okay for someone that's never played Skyrim before, having everything included in the purchase is not terrible... For them.

But yeah, this is some Todd Howard bullshit right here.

A video actually popped up on my feed years ago about when the N64 came out and how the console retailed for $200 if we take an inflation calculator from 1996 the N64 today would've cost around $350 and games probably would have been $70. We should feel so lucky that their are other platforms such as PC now days where we can find game keys hella cheap it may not be physical but it gives us a chance to play the full game at a cheap price today

I don't know what's worse: the fact that Bethesda thought they could get away with charging $70 for Skyrim, AGAIN, or that people will probably buy this.
It's available as a $20 upgrade of you have Skyrim already, I wouldn't say it's worth it since there's no mod support and probably no support for future CC DLCs.

Honestly I like the complete editions. Especially if dlc gets out of hand. But I honestly think it should cost less than $60. $30-40 is a good balance considering how old a game is by the time it is "Complete"

I wouldn't mind buying the complete edition on disc and then maybe passing on the "incomplete" edition to someone else who wants it. I just like knowing I have everything all in one package. Especially since they don't keep digital shops open forever and if they close, or lose license and get delisted, it's gone. No way to recover without mods or hack... ("piracy") in quotes cause I mean is mostly abandonware if I can't purchase. :ninja:

$70 for ANY version of Skyrim is delusional. It's $50 elsewhere, still not great, but why charge an extra $20? As much as I'd like to say, "no one's going to buy that", clearly someone is. It's like Todd Howard said: "If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it."

Ninteconomists will defend saying this is good.

I wish Nintendo games would lose their resale value to teach those cretins a lesson.

Yeah, I agree with you there. I buy lots of physical game carts for switch from Limited Run Games because they come "complete" with all dlc and updates.

Unfortunately the value of something is simply what someone will pay for it, so as long as nin10yearolds exist nintendonium will be worth lots of money

What's worse is that people will happily buy it anyway, which is why Bethesda is smart to do this. If you people would only organize and learn to boycott together, this industry would be far better. Until then, they will justifiably treat you as walking ATMs.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
