In any method you need someone with a hacked switch.
They could either transfer the island locally or, given that your s/o's account has a switch online subscription, could upload it to their "Save Data Cloud" and then you could download it to your non-hacked switch. please be careful who you give your account information to, when going for the second option.

Besides that, when you say "the island recovery tool failed", do you mean you could not retrieve the island from the Save Data Cloud?

Best regards.
Correct. There was no island present to recover. I believe through my copy of the game I can find her Dream Address, though. And I have a dozen Switch consoles I can use for homebrew. I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Are there step-by-step instructions that a novice can follow to do this?

As this is a niche use-case, there are no step-by-step instructions to be found anywhere. I could write something up for you, if that helps.

Also, because it seems key to this process, here is the relevant dream address. I believe I need a dump of this to somehow transfer over? DA-4502-6713-0778.
Thanks again!

That would be amazing xPoyo, thank you so much!

I'll explain the method of how to get an Island back, so that it can also go online as per usual. I hope that works for you. I can't do the exact step my steps, but I try breaking down the scary or tedious tasks. If any issues arise, please let me know, I will try to update the guide to better reflect what you have to do.

Prerequisites
  • 2x Nintendo Switch systems
    • one with Atmosphere CFW, that still has access to Nintendo's servers (i.e. not banned; not incognito; no homebrew software/games installed to the hardware itself, besides the Homebrew Apps in the hbmenu)
    • one with no CFW; the one where you want your restored island on
    • Both Switches need a valid (else you will be banned, duh) copy of the game (on latest versions [2.0.0 to 2.0.5])
    • Both Switches need the Island Transfer Tool from the eShop
  • my Animal Crossing Dream Island Tool: Luna
  • a Save File Manager like JKSV/Checkpoint
  • Patience

The Basis
  1. First we need a save file template, as Nintendo doesn't store 100% of the islands in a dream for safety reasons (probably, I don't work 4 Nintendo)
    • for that we need an Island on (preferably) the non-CFW Switch.
This island needs to have access to online play and has to have at least the same amount of players as the island has, that you are trying to recover
    • If you have this island currently on the non-CFW Switch, as it's preferable:
      • Use the Island Transfer Tool to move the Island to the CFW Switch, more information here
    • Use JKSV/Checkpoint to backup the save file from the CFW Switch
  2. Install Luna how described by the Quick Start Guide on the Luna Github page (download just the latest release and unpack it on the root of the microSD card of the CFW Switch)
    • move the contents of the save file backup from Step 1 to the SD:\config\luna\enctemplate folder
    • check if Luna is installed by going in the hbmenu (Album App) and locating the app
    • open Luna, click Dump (just for testing the save file), if there is any error messages related to "template", check your steps. ignore any other error messages for now
Dumping
you've made it this far! great!
  1. on the CFW Switch, open Animal Crossing again; lay in your bed and get dreaming. Visit the Island you want to recover.
  2. once visited, go to the hbmenu (Album App) and launch Luna. It should display the current island name on the "Dump"-Button. press it and if there aren't any issues with your template, you're golden. else fix your template.
Injecting the Dump
  1. move the Date Folder ("DD.MM.YYYY @ hh-mm"), that is inside the "SD:\config\luna\dump\[DA-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX] IslandName\" folder, to the JKSV/Checkpoint folder, where the save file backups go for Animal Crossing
  2. Open JKSV/Checkpoint and restore the Date Folder to Animal Crossing
Moving to the non-CFW Switch
  1. now again use the Island Transfer Tool but this time to move it to the non-CFW Switch

What I described in the previous post is for you to dump the island yourself. All dumps I share in this forum are not able to go online, due to lacking Nintendo Account Identification (NNID). If you dump it yourself with your own save file as a template, then the dumps can also go online!

Wow. This is magnificent. I have a few days off coming up so I am going to give this a shot. I should use my own active island as a template here that I am basically "injecting" her dream island into on the CFW Switch before transferring it over to her real Switch? Do I have the basic gist correct? I would love to gift you a game or something (whatever you like!) for all of your generosity thus far and going forward. You really didn't have to do all that and I can't thank you enough. Now to see if my dingus self can get it working!

Wow. Got it! Really amazing what you and the homebrew community have been able to do here. It's honestly completely mind-blowing!

You got the gist! As I said before, if any issues or misunderstandings occur, let me know, I'll get back to you.
Besides that: no thank you, I don't take gifts for what I do here. just wanna help from time to time.
I wish you luck with the attempt!

Thank you for the guide Poyo! It took a couple of tries to get it to work, for some reason I had to dream first to connect to the internet then the airport online features worked. Hope that helps people trying to dump their own islands!

Slightly odd question but it might fit here, if I want to move my plaza and town hall to a location that it can't normally spawn, will it be flagged if I upload it as a DA? Same with the Airport, if I move it inland will that trigger something? Land bridges? I only plan on giving the DA to very trusted friends, I'm just wondering if there are any validity checks that Nintendo does on their side, I know furniture in water are fine as I have a no-NHSE DA with underwater items placed legitimately via glitch.

I have my map with no sea and no nook plaza, it should be safe for you, modded DA at nost will took down your DA only
