Nintendo launches Pokemon Sound Library, allowing content creators to use Diamond and Pearl OST in projects

dpdpdpdp.png

Nintendo is known for being fairly strict when it comes to its intellectual properties. However, they've launched a website that might make it easier for those to use music content from one of its franchises. The Pokemon Company has revealed the existence of the Pokemon DP Sound Library, which allows you to freely listen to any of the soundtrack or sound effects from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, or even use them in select cases without fear of copyright strikes. At least, so long as you follow their fairly restrictive rules. The full 149-track OST is available to use in non-commercial ways, such as using the songs at a non-commercial dance, play, and sporting event, or as background audio to a video.

Anything involving commercial use is a no-go, as is using the music in games or software. You also can't use the songs in videos that have a religious or political focus, or if it promotes or advertises a product. The full list of guidelines, as well as the music itself, is available on the Pokemon DP Sound Library website.

Pokémon DP Sound Library is a place to both listen and download the music and sound effects from the 2006 Nintendo DS™ games, Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version. Explore the world of incredible sounds for Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, which serves as the roots for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus games.

Extremely too little and by far way too late. Under normal circumstances I'd be fine with baby steps first, but this is on the heels of Nintendo being Nintendo and smashing DMCAs or other copyright claims into the faces of so many different gaming sub-communities, for over a decade now.

Unless it's monetized, you should be safe.
So it changes nothing then. You could already use just about any music in your videos, you just can't monetize them (and they'll be monetized by the copyright holder of the music, but that's inconsequential), obviously people want to monetize their videos, so this is useless.

I’m not trying to defend Nintendo, but holy hell I didn’t expect them to put the whole soundtrack *download* for free too. Doesn’t excuse all their copyright shenanigans, even if they were well within their rights. I’ve had this soundtrack downloaded for eons through “other” channels (read: pirated), but it’s nice to have an official version.

In this day and age MOST people want to monetize the things they create online (unless they are already wealthy). I personally had to replace all the background music in one of my homebrew games to copyright free music just to reduce the barrier for people who wanted to monetize youtube videos containing gameplay. Never realized monitization was so important for youtube people until recently.

Until I get made a partner on YouTube, I don't give two shits about monetization. I made $1,440 USD on Etsy last year just selling my Gameboy Test cartridges for $20 a pop.

imagine having to wait for some out of touch corporation to let you freely use their games osts as a sound library rather than just using the OSTs without their permission because it's under fair use

this post was made by every human with a functioning brain gang

I mean... seriously people?

All the Pokemon OSTs except Shield/Sword are available to buy. These albums are pretty good actually and are worth owning physically (not just Pokemon, but Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Zelda have beautiful albums too).
Okay okay, DP and GS O.S.T. are overpriced physically at this point since they're old, but you know what else? They're also available on iTunes.
So if you wanted to legally listen to Pokemon music you could, all 7 gens and anime versions.

Yes, I get that it's frustrating that you lost a free way to listen to their music, yes I get that they should have a better legal offer and that's the reason channels like GilvaSunner exist.
But here... they're making a positive move, so I don't see why all that complaining is coming from. If you're still not happy just buy it on iTunes or import, no need to pretend you do piracy for lack of better option.

Why is everyone here talking about Nintendo, this is Game Freak doing this. Nintendo has not done shit to try and mitigate the issues on Youtube. GF just put this up independently of that whole scenario which, admittedly, is hard to believe, but its been out for a month in Japan already. Besides, the old, decrepit sack of flesh in charge of Nintendo can't even work a computer to upload a single track from HGSS or ORAS, let alone DP's whole OST. The only thing he knows how to do is take down videos and provide no alternative. I can only dream of the day when new blood takes over Nintendo, that company would be so much better with a guy who's age isn't triple digits and who's IQ is, not the other way around.

Exactly - it's very much worth clarifying that it isn't Nintendo suddenly deciding to let others use their music, it's The Pokémon Company. While they're partially owned by Nintendo, they have their own free reign with most stuff like this - hence why they had mobile apps before Nintendo outright ever touched them, or why they have Funko Pop figures but Mario doesn't.

But being accurate doesn't make for an enticing news article to click, does it? :P Why do that if you can get some sick Nintendo ragebait after the GilvaSunner music takedown? :rofl2:

...and evidently my IQ is also in the double digits, I made a double post. How do I delete stuff? I literally made my account 1 minute ago.

All of that also on iTunes for $10.

It's all available, except Sword/Shield.

Also most of the Japanese music is not even available digitally. So going after Nintendo / GF specifically is silly.
