I could take a photo of the contents of a garbage truck, call it modern art and sell it for several million dollars.

If there's one thing harder to understand than modern art, it's why someone would randomly show up on a message board about console hacking and start asking for opinions on modern art. (Or Linux usage, for that matter.)

I thought this bit of Adam Ruins Everything was pretty neat:

But that's why they posted in General Off-Topic Chat.

Do it. Just make sure it's in 4k resolution. :teach::grog:

Art is subjective and what's appealing to one person isn't always going to appeal to another. I've seen some modern art pieces that just clicked with me and I instantly loved what I was looking at. I've seen others that didn't have that click and I didn't really feel anything when seeing them. This is the same with all art and isn't just limited to modern art.

Good stuff.
Shame they don't make new ones:

As for "art":
I have a "taste" and thats it.
I don't pretend to 'get' or 'like' something to appease to anyone.

Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s (thanks wikipedia btw)

so modern art is just an art period, i dont see anything to not get

Many boards all over the Internet have an "off-topic chat". I presume they're generally used by a board's regular audience that wants to talk about other things. It seems that a random visitor seeking discussion about a random topic would probably benefit from something with more focus.

I see what you mean. It is kind of odd. A newbie's first posts would usually be something related to videogames on gbatemp.

If you mean abstract art then no, I don’t get it. It doesn’t evoke any emotions in me and I fail to see any degree of artistic craft in it. All those splotches and random lines mean nothing to me - if anything, it all seems like a bit of a scam to dupe wealthy collectors into buying it for big bucks, which I am all for.

CBA to find the link but there was a news story the other day about a gallery wanting a refund from an artist who they paid a huge commission to for some fresh new arts. The artist presented them with two blank canvases, entitled "Take The Money And Run". I shit you not.

It's a bit more complicated than that.
Presenting a blank canvas as an "art" piece has been done already: https://www.moma.org/audio/playlist/40/639
Had the artist just taken money for a commission and produced blank canvases, the museum would have just displayed them. As the museum director said, "I want to give [the artist] absolutely the right that a work has been created in its own right, which actually comments on the exhibition we have," for what that's worth.
Here's what happened.
The museum loaned him the money to recreate a previous work of his, which was money, bank notes, equivalent to the average yearly income in Austria, in a frame. He also did one for Denmark, with Danish kroner. As a comment on something or other.
The museum in Denmark wanted a similar piece for their current exhibition, and provided money, $84,000 in cash, as raw materials that the artist would arrange and frame. It was not supposed to be payment, and once the exhibition ends in January 2022 it would be disassembled and the money deposited back into the museum's account.
Instead, he sent them two blank canvases and kept the "materials". As a "statement" on the "state of the art" and protest of "conditions in the workforce" and blah blah whatever.
Now here's the fun part. If he returns the money in January, he won't be in major breach of contract. So now everyone is waiting for January to see how this plays out.

I don't understand modern art, I don't understand why copies of old games sell for nearly 1 million and I don't understand why things like pokemon cards can go for hundreds
in other words, i don't understand humanity
