Yeah, Citra is not dead but certainly its not going to improve anymore on Switch. Even the original coders named citra as "experimental", for a weaker system like the Switch, unofficial 3DS emulation will never be great. Just a few games are kind of playable.

damn....that seriously sucks ...i am legit shocked that it can handle ps4 imports like at all :/...and good gosh..did they do this "hybrid" handheld console dirty..i have 0 clue what they were thinking making this thing.

I predict Nintendo's Ninjas gave him a visit.
lmao xD

Yeah, this is how I was thinking it'd end up; Citra, from what I understand, isn't easy to run on PC. While I'm sure you don't need a CPU with as many cores as one can get their hands on like with RPCS3, to think the Switch can do anything practical past the DC is to not be in the know about what emulators are realistic for a piece of hardware.

Hell, I don't think it can still do Saturn at full speed, and I know that's because the Saturn was a freakin' whack piece of work from Sega when they realized sprite scaling wasn't going to cut it, on top of other blunders because they apparently had to do something about a piece of dental equipment that was once known as an Atari Jaguar!

Fake news. There is plenty of room for improvement. It is labeled as experimental because 3DS emulation on ARM devices is in its infancy. Citra for ARM released literally less than a year ago.

You forgot to say "HIGH END ARM devices", clearly the Nintendo Switch is not.

So when exactly was the latest patreon release?
July, and it was huge in terms of speed up.
  • Dragon Quest 7 & 8 3DS are full speed now. DQ8 was really slow before the latest release.
  • Shin Megami Tensei 4 full speed.
  • Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask full speed.
  • Bravely Default and Bravely Second full speed
So far I've completed Ocarina of Time 3DS with the emulator and just got 2 or 3 crashes in my whole playthrough (30h+. For example Link's tunic turned black and it crashed). There was a slight slowdown during sunsets but I suspect the latest release fixed that. Now I'm going through DQ8 (15h in). Haven't tried much else :)

Edit: shot on my switch with the latest release:
I won't share the emu, but If you need help setting things up, I can share my configs. I really recommend supporting the author with Patreon, it's worth it.

As long as I can play my fav jrpgs with it I'm happy, and that's the case :D

Exactly, it's just insane how much progress has been done between April and July. I just can't believe DQ8 is running at full speed.

Edit: I can shout more videos of Zelda or SMT4 if you are curious to see how they run. Or if you want to see something else let me know. It's a bit tedious because I have to decrypt the roms but I'll do it if there are not too many requests.

I didn't know Gunner got banned. Back on topic, yeah the Switch probably won't be able to reach great performance levels. I wish more people were involved in the development. Heck, I would love to get in the scene one day but my hours in a day are rather limited.

Check my vids in my post above, some games are definitely not full speed (for example DQ11 3DS (japanese only), but it's probably one of the most demanding 3DS games). But it improved quite a lot.

Cool, would you be so kind and test some more games and you give a little bit more input on that?

There are some games which I'm quite interested in, like Metroid samus returns, Zelda a link between worlds and star fox 64, also are mods compatible like the majoras mask restoration mod?

Thanks you in advance

m4xw just released a version that supports high res texture mods but I haven't tried that.
I'll see what I can test. IIrc Link between 2 worlds ran better on the canary build, I'll have to check.

Thanks for the info on the update, it's sounding great. Do you know if it has a rotated display (TATE) mode now? I asked m4xw about it a few months ago and he said he'd add it soon.

You might know this, but if you own a 3DS (or "acquire" it another way) you can get a file to put in the right place for Citra so you don't need to decrypt roms before using them.

I think texture mods are out of the question, and not really necessary for a switch port. The hardware is simply not powerful enough for that, but game play mods like the restoration mod, really enhance the the experience for majoras mask (e.g. proper Zora swimming, better Bossfights, streamlined start pause menu, item button mapping, changing masks with the d-pad)

Rotation is supported natively by retroarch

can you link me the patreon?

I saw your post. I still believe what I said though. 3DS is hard to emulate even on the most powerful of PCs. There's only so much that one guy can squeeze out of the Switch

m4xw tweeted that he still working on Citrus emulator and will relase new update soon he busy with other cores with retroarch also he already released mupen64 and mention that he gonna release the flycast standalone too. Just be patient and do something else
