New Xbox Series “FPS Boost” feature improves performance of backwards compatible games

Xbox Series X | S owners will have a new feature to play around with today, in the form of “FPS Boost”. This capability takes older generation games, in this case, Xbox One titles that ran at 30fps, and increases their performance to 60fps or even 120fps. Five select games currently support the newly launched FPS Boost: Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs 2, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and New Super Lucky’s Tale, with the last of which being playable at 120fps. More backwards compatible games that make use of this feature will be announced soon.

This is just the beginning. We will announce and release more titles featuring FPS Boost soon, as well roll out new menu icons and system settings in an upcoming system update. Starting this Spring, you can go into the “Manage Game” section for any title, where you’ll be presented with a new “Compatibility Options” button that will allow you to toggle FPS Boost (as well as Auto HDR) on or off. There will also be a new indicator informing you when a game is running with FPS Boost whenever you hit the Xbox Button on your controller. You decide how you want to play your favorite games, whether in its original form or with FPS Boost.

Thats a bit misleading, ps4 pro just ran at the same speeds as a regular ps4 unless you turned boost mode on. Typically bc isnt done this way, but sony was worried a few games wouldnt work right ( I think a handful dont run correctly with boost mode enabled). On the xbox one x games that didnt have patches for the new system didnt force any downclocking, it just ran as well as the hardware could handle.
I am yet to find a single game that had any issues on the Pro in Boost Mode, but I have seen some mild glitching in Mafia III on the 5. When the Pro was still my daily driver, Boost Mode was flicked on for everything I played.

Tembo, Slender and Grow Up are the only games I know of that had issues with boost mode, kind of crazy that the pro launched without it at all and that it needed to be turned on. Ive never ever had a device that couldnt run older software without clocking to the exact same clocks as previous models.

It's actually not uncommon in older PC games. If your clock is too high, you're going to have a bad time in titles like MK4 - back in the olden days of DOS we even had a dedicated button just to handle that problem. The same can be said about older console games that tie system events to the clock - running the clock faster effectively runs the game faster than expected. Very uncommon nowadays, of course, but can happen on a console ecosystem where the developer is expecting the system to run at a specific, static clock. If that's the case, there's a possibility of desyncing.

Man Xbox is looking better and better by the day. Just sucks all the games I play are exclusive on Playstation or have versions on pc

Its alright, microsoft isnt worried about what hardware you use. For console players they did provide great hardware, but you can play on pc if you like. You can even stream games to a phone if you are a masochist.

I though it was a feature already. I remember on Xbox One X release some years ago that a list of games would benefit from the upgraded hardware (including OG Xbox and 360 games). I thought it was frame rate, but now I realized that it was for resolution only

Xbox Series FPS Boost?
Sounds like the mid-generation update of another Xbox model.
"After the success of the Xbox Series FPS, the lightweight iteration of the Xbox Series FPX, we now introduce the much more powerful Xbox Series FPS Boost!"

The title of this article goes even further and suggests a collaboration with Nintendo to create the "New Xbox Series FPS Boost".

That is true (and did mean increased framerates also - something that's carried over to Series S/X too, but only if & when the fps dropped below what it should be) - this one can override the fps cap previously set, in compatible games, and without any work from the devs either. Sony have already started this with PS4 God of War amongst others, previously running at a locked 30fps (beyond the initial release), now running at 60 on PS5 (MS likewise on select titles). Needs the devs to do it though, which this cuts out.
Interesting to see one of the games being from EA (they have to agree to allow the feature of course) - you'd expect them to say a big fat no, then try to resell it with the extra framerate ala Burnout Paradise Remastered (rumour has it MS showed them the 360 game running at 4k on a One X, they refused saying it didn't look how they intended, then, well, Remastered showed up...)

Because it actually requires effort and isnt just flipping 1 switch
No way... Really?

Maybe I was insinuating that it should have been a bullet point from the beginning? Or maybe they had plenty of time to push this as a day one feature?

Well the problem is that many games have functions associated with framerate. For example in Ocarina of Time items despawn after a certain amount of frames. They forgot this in 3D and now that the game runs at a higher framerate items despawn faster.

Microsoft is absolutely slaughtering Sony this gen. All sony has done in the past two gens is sat with a thumb up their ass smashing the "buy" button for timed exclusives, the most toxic gaming business tactic. Then there's just Microsoft releasing insane subscription services, unheard-of levels of backwards compatibility and now shit like this which IMPROVES backwards compatible games further. Wild.

The way this works is actually really cool. This isn't as straight forward as just offering an old un-capped game more horsepower.

The game remains capped at 30fps from its own code, but MS kind of overclocks the directx layer. The calls between the game engine, and the DX API running twice as fast without the game engine really aware. I'm sure this could potentially break all sorts of time sensitive code that game engines might be using, I can see animations maybe running too fast.. sort of like overclocking an old emulator. I'm sure that's why this has a bit of a validation process from MS, rather than just throwing a switch.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
