"An error has occurred" with the installed 3ds cia version. 11.14 old3ds, latest luma.
Is there some trick to getting this version working?

edit: to answer my own question, it appears the .cia installed version would need a source change to use the correct savegame filepaths, like datapub:/profile.dat for example. Anyways, running the dsi version as dsi homebrew works fine.
It errored because the ARM9 binary size is above 2.5MB.
Also, writing to datapub:/profile.dat wouldn't work, because homebrew cannot yet read or write to NAND (aside from GodMode9i, which can only read the NAND on DSi).

You clearly didn't read the main post, where this is explained already!

Why does it suck compared to this version?
It doesn't suck at all. The 3ds eshop version is fantastic. The sound is beautiful, the 3d effect is superb, and it uses the whole top screen.

I think theBLUEBIRD is confusing the 3ds eshop version with the cartridge version, which has a debatable 2.5D athstetic style. The 3ds eshop version is in the traditional cave story pixel style.

Meehh.. The original pixel version of CaveStory is the best version!! 2.5D can never compare!!
Reread my previous post. The 3ds has 3 versions of cave story: dsiWare, 3dsWare, and 3ds cartridge (this is the 2.5D one).

I was clearly talking about the 2.5D version here.... wtf... Back off guys!
This is freakin awesome!! The 3DS version thats released on the eShop sucks... So this port will fit great in my collection!! THanks for leting us know!
You clearly said the 3ds version that released on the eShop sucked but the eshop version was the original version. The version that you don't like is Cave Story 3D and that was only released on cart.

Well I got it from the shop... So what? The point was that I stated my preference for the original version..

lmao I'm tempted to throw this on my 3DS just to replay the game, even though I have almost every other version

You had just confused everyone is all, no big deal

Exactly as @Ricken said you just confused us with the wording of what you originally said. No big deal at all. And now I'm off to play the best version of Cave Story which obviously is the Megadrive version. How they made it so good on such an old system is mind blowing :)

I was just confused because afaik the cart version of Cave Story 3D was never available on eshop.
Yeah I was gonna say, I have fond childhood memories of wanting to get it off the eShop but seeing it was cartridge only; but it could've been listed for a little while, who knows, Cubic Ninja was listed in Japan for a while ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think this has been posted here before, so let's fix that!

This recent DS port of Cave Story has been made available on December (8th?) 2020, which is based on the CSE2 decompilation project, which itself is a decompilation of the freeware version of Cave Story.
Unfortunately, despite the project being based on the freeware version, it got taken down by Nicalis, who to my knowledge, do not own the freeware version (though correct me if I'm wrong).

So, for preservation sake, and a way to play Cave Story on your DS console, I'll upload the port here as an attachment!

Included is:
  • CaveStoryDS-0.1.nds: For use with regular flashcard kernels
  • CSDSdsi.nds: For use with nds-hb-menu and/or TWiLight Menu++
(No CIA is included, due to the ARM9 binary being too big)
The source will not be uploaded, due to a risk of a DMCA takedown.

Thanks to:
  • rain, who developed the port!
  • arceus on the DS(i) Mode Hacking Discord server for providing both a build and a backup of the source code including compiled builds!
Times downloaded before the re-upload: 62

Will Cave Story + work with this?
