Reflecting on 2020 - what was your favorite game or gaming moment of the past year?

download.jpg

Welcome, 2021. Another year has come and gone, and as we roll 2020’s flaming dumpster down the hill into the pile of years that has come before, it’s as good a time as ever to reminisce upon the games that released throughout the mess that was 2020.

While delays were rampant, many games still managed to release, such as the Demon's Souls remake, a "definitive edition" of one of the biggest recent JRPGs in the form of Persona 5: Royal, new Animal Crossing, The Last of Us, Half-Life, Yakuza, and Assassin's Creed games, indie darling hits, like Hades, Spelunky 2, Spiritfarer, and so many more.

This previous year saw the release of a brand new console generation, with both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S. Those console launches also brought with them waves of scalping, to the chagrin of most gamers worldwide. But for the most part, the major titles this year came earlier in the year, releasing at the tail-end of the lifespan for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And, of course, you can’t forget the Nintendo Switch, which exploded in popularity yet again with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and spent the rest of the year quietly coasting along with sparse first-party releases here and there.

What wasn’t sparse, however, was the number of leaks that proliferated throughout 2020. From Watch_Dogs Legion’s source code leaking right on launch, to most of The Last of Us Part II’s story cutscenes being uploaded before the game was even publicly available—and of course, you can’t forget the insane Nintendo Gigaleaks—this year saw companies getting hacked and data being illegally distributed at a breakneck pace.

No matter what your thoughts on 2020 overall, it’s clear that it was a downright wild year, so we ask you, what video game-related event, be it a release, an event, or scandal, was your favorite of 2020?

And by the way--Happy New Year, GBAtemp!

I'd say having to play SSBU, Pokémon Sword and MK8D with my friends and broadcasting everything on my Twitch channel.

That's what i call a greatest hit, and also the fantastic Expansion Pass from Pokémon Sword...

It blew my mind!

This year I picked up an unpatched switch. I was lucky that I picked one up just before the Corona stay at home business started, and the prices went way up.

I also took the plunge on a used Vita oled unit. I am a long time 3DS custom fw tweaker and thanks to GBAtemp also now a Vita tweaker/hacker/tinkerer/fairy.

Happy 2021 to all:!: :toot::grog:

Wasn’t planning on any games this year, but the year had different plans.

Favorite moments were either completing Ace Combat 7 start to finish (only played two other ones and always got stuck halfway through), or getting deep into Tropico and Cities: Skylines (love city builders but haven’t had a PC in years, much less the time to enjoy them - glad they released on console)

not too many games played this year. School and work have devoured my "free" time. but i did play animal crossing, ff7 remake/reimagining, and paper mario oragami. all of which were...fine, i guess, but still missing that spark of fun. too much smoke and not enough fire. ff7 remake was very much a completely different game in tone, storytelling, environment, setting, and context. felt more like a modern adaptation than a remake. which is fine i guess but i mean why.......oh right, what was my favorite gaming moments. right right, got off track. those were all fun games, if a bit lackluster.

and i finally got around to playing slime rancher. on an xbox one s. chugging along at 0fps at times, it was still pretty good fun.

finally got VR. definitely the most fun. it's been hard to have fun this year.

animal crossing is what got us through, though. A distraction, for sure. a quality distraction.

Nintendo bringing back Splatfests for us to play during this lockdown crap was really nice of them to do, especially after Finalfest. Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal also kept us PLENTY busy this year.

Persona 5 Royal's definitely up there, along with Ghost of Tsushima and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (which I was pleasantly surprised to find that I loved it, considering I loathed the original with its clunky equipment system and inadequate Quest guidance and stuff).

Hard to believe it's been several months since P5R came out...that still feels new to me.

I’m not a DualShock kinda person by any means, but the DualSense is enough to convert me happily. It’s actually comfortable—a first for Sony, for me. It’s better than the Astro C40, better than the Switch Pro, only beat by the Elite V2.
Have you tried 8bitdo's SN30 Pro+ gamepad? It's my personal favourite controller, far better than the Switch Pro.

I'd have to strongly disagree with that choice, honestly - it's an empty, soulless release that dropped a significant amount of content (hundreds of Pokemon species and over a hundred moves, along with Mega Evolution and the EXP Share item to toggle party-wide EXP gain) from previous games, and added almost nothing worthwhile to compensate. It, and the DLC and HOME, are all massively overpriced for just how little one's getting; any game this short on content should be $40 at most, with the DLC being $10 (and HOME being $5 or so, since it's effectively storing ~6000 KB or ~6 MB - nothing worth $16 p.a. for).

Boring, bland animations and models ripped straight from the 3DS titles with only a slight touch-up (mostly that they no longer need to be compressed anymore), and overworld decals (e.g. trees) that can be unfavourably compared to Pokemon Stadium on the Nintendo 64. Raids, with absolutely garbage AI helpers. Not every member of a Gigantamax-capable species (e.g. Snorlax, Pikachu, Meowth) can do so for some stupid reason, and Dynamax only lasts for three turns and doesn't change the Pokemon's type or Ability or anything - and can only be done in certain areas.

Ultra Sun/Moon were much smaller in terms of total size, yet they managed to contain 807 species and everything; what's SwSh's excuse? Why not bring back EVERY species and EVERY move via that overpriced DLC, thereby effectively negating a very strong piece of criticism? Why not show that Game Freak and The Pokemon Company actually care about game quality, instead of just shitting out new releases for kiddies, parents, and uninformed customers to waste money on?

Sword/Shield came out on the Nintendo Switch, yet did nothing to justify the platform shift - they're ugly trash compared to Xenoblade Chronicles, to Pikmin 3 Deluxe, to Super Mario Odyssey, to any number of far more beautiful and enjoyable games. Pokemon has proved itself to be the most static franchise Nintendo has, seeing no real innovation since the early 2000s and Ruby/Sapphire's release (the only time the underlying Pokemon data structure was overhauled).

I haven't, though I've heard a lot of praises sung for it. 8BitDo is usually great, so I trust that it's a solid controller--I just don't tend to like symmetrical sticks.

Not one moment I suppose but I was pretty surprised to find that I completed 50 games this year--despite taking several months off to study for the bar exam.

The feeling of beating the hardest time trial in Crash Team Racing earlier this month gave me enough of a joyous adrenaline rush to probably be my favorite gaming moment this year.

Getting my Series S and running Forza Horizon 4 for the first time. For the context, I've mostly skipped on 8th generation of gaming and haven't played a decent high-budget title in a long while (not counting Nintendo Switch, which i still treat as mostly handheld thingie), so diving into current-gen again after a nearly decade-long hiatus and seeing just what kind of visuals and experiences it has to offer genuinely blew my mind =)

I´ve played Hitman Absolution and Hitman the new 1 and 2 games (via 2). I´d love to play Hitman 3 this month but 60 Euro for 6 levels seems a bit much. (despite the high replay value)
