Hardware I haven't even had my Switch for a year and I've been having these overheating problems for months.

I can barely play for 15 minutes now without the Switch overheating and shutting down in the dock. I guess I could send it in for repairs but there's no guarantee it won't just happen again since I'm not even sure how all of this happened in the first place. Maybe I have something installed that is making it overheat?

well, I had my nand get corrupted for no apparent reason. I was on sleep mode coming back to mega man legacy collection 1, then it said "a serious error has occurred, please restart the system." when I did that, it would no longer turn on. it was still under warranty, so I got a replacement. I'd suggest you do that if you're under warranty. I've had no problems with my refurbished system (yeah, they didn't repair the original, only told me what had happened. I lost all saves in the process, so I got nso immediately after getting the new system). my animal crossing switch has no issues either. I think what happened was the result of a faulty extension cable, because the system was using one, and when I removed the extension cable, all three prongs fell out. I'm using a direct connection now.

I got my Switch from a Giveaway so I don't think it has warranty.

Did the fan fail? Can you hear it spinning in game? Is the fan making strange/loud noises? The Switch should normally never overheat, it doesn't get particularly warm. It's definitely a sign that something is wrong with the cooling. Could be vents clogged with dust but you haven't had it that long so that seems unlikely. Unless you're trying to play in a literal desert, that is not common behavior.

I tried finding the warranty check thing on their website. it seems that you have to call them now.

It may be faster to change the thermal paste yourself. Just use a guide and be cautious. Watch the guide many times until you feel like you can do the repair confidently.

He/She did got it from a giveaway so it could be possible, really depends how much a person play.
I've seen many a Switch repair on YouTube and the thermal paste has never been dried out. The stuff they use is pretty low quality and one could get better temps by replacing it with higher quality thermal paste, however that is not going to solve the root problem.

Worth a try to be honest, the thermal paste Nintendo used was shitty that I can agree with.

personally, I'd go with the warranty thing if it's possible, because there are a number of things that could be causing overheating. if it were me, I'd be hesitant to play the system after repair, because the problem could creep up again. I saw the times to check about a repair, and it's seven days a week from like 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. pactific standard time I believe. I think nintendo's repair is in California from what I remember. they'll most likely send you back a refurbished unit.

if it is out of warranty, I guess you could check the ventilation (dust) and thermal paste. you have nothing to lose at that point.

Thanks. Just my luck the warranty just expired near the end of last month.
you said you had it a year.
the switch has 2 years warranty

was gonna make it confusing that it was overheating since marikos are impossible to overheat and if it was a year old it would be a mariko guaranteed

solution is to replace your thermal and get one of those dock shells that makes the switch exposed

I did a google search and it said it had a one year warranty and I even went to Nintendo to get it checked and the person helping me told me the warranty had expired. >.<

I second the suggestion of getting a dock shell replacement. It will keep your Switch much cooler. The one squee666 suggested is ok, but there are better ones. This one has a spot for the LED and retains the spring load bed of the original dock. Aliexpress probably also has the same dock shell for maybe cheaper.

Edit: Damn, didn't link the right URL. Just pay attention that it has the LED spot on the corner.
