Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

Not sure why, but Tesla causes a Crash with Pinball Arcade when trying to Load Cheats. Can still do it the other way with EdiZon in Applet Mode.

Thanks for your reply. My tv doesn't have that since it is kinda old. Though I changed the setting from 16:9 to full screen that now it displays perfectly on 100%.
Yeah, some TVs are calling overscan "16:9". I have in samsung plasma picture mode "16:9" which is overscan and "no overscan"

Just updated to FW 10.2.0 and this is giving me black screen on boot now in both SXOS and Atmo, any ideas? i liked being able to switch between the two for emulator purposes.

also before anyone states why i don't just use solely atmosphere, i need XCI loading as i have a separate dock in my stand up arcade machine that holds all the "arcade/fighting" games so i don't need to always have them installed.

Thanks :)

I can not bring up the menu for the life of me in docked mode and only in handheld mode how do I fix this?I have the latest atmosphere and files.

anyone else had an issue where it works docked in home menu but as soon as a game boots it just disappears. I do mean disappears as when i use status monitor and press both sticks all of the inputs stop as it should.I have only twice gotten it to work in docked. In portable mode it works fine

Reboot your switch. I once had my dock going mental and not showing any picture output, the green light was flashing like crazy on the dock for a few seconds and then nothing. A simple switch reboot fixed it.

Look 1 Post above you.

can i increase the width of tesla overlay?
I have been curious about this as well. I forgot where I saw it, but I saw a Video where someone was able to expand the Overlay Area to view more of the Text, but I have not been able to figure it out.
