Soo, recently (as a lot of you probably are aware) the OoT-romhack 'The Missing Link' has been released. I have patched an N64-version and it works on an emulator on my phone and PC, so I tried injecting it into OoT(USA) WiiU. It seems to work, but for some reason the A-, B- and C-buttons do not display at all throughout the game (which means that for example I am unable to see the ocarina-melodies.) Anyone who has had more success with this rom hack?

For everyone who is looking to a link to the past..errr.. patch,

https://web.archive.org/web/20200930204000/https://tml.z64.me/
Here is the project webpage (+ patch files) as it was Sept 30th before Ninty pulled the trigger on this romhack.

Yeah I injected it with the same results.

Did you use this website with the WAD file and the tml_wii_vc.bps file to patch the WAD directly as suggested in the official instructions or did you try manually injecting it?

What I did was I took the .n64 ver of OoT and patch TML into that using the website, and then inject the n64 rom into WiiU-VC OoT to try and retain gamepad controls. It is functional up to a certain degree but if we cannot see the c-button icons it's kinda hard to learn the new/different ocarina melodies :P I might give the wad way a go later but I'd prefer to use the gamepad controls instead of a wiimote+chuck, feels more ..natural

Edit: patched and installed a wad, only to find out it requires a classic controller which I do not have around atm...

Edit2: I have also tried to replace OoT on the (eur) gc zelda collection disk and inject that into a wiiu installable, but that will only black-screen when I try to start OoT from there. The other games on the disc do work though. I suspect that the patched rom being half the size (16MB) as opposed to the unpatched (32MB) might be the issue in this specific case.

Edit3: g*ddamn I keep editing :P I tried the patched n64 rom with Not64 (wii-homebrew n64 emu) and got pretty good 60FPS results untill I tried talking with a character. When I tried talking to someone I got a stack dump hard-crash, and had to power cycle the entire Unit :rofl2: Maybe I'll have more success with Wii64, but that is a story for another time my children :P

Patching the VC wad directly is probably the way to go. I think a vWii forwarder would allow it to still use the gamepad.
Edit: If you make a forwarder to launch the game using the vWii NAND Title Launcher from https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-wiivc-injector-script-gc-wii-homebrew-support.483577/
Then gamepad should work.
You can also inject USB Loader GX or WiiFlow and use it as a menu to select and launch any vWii channel, I think. But you can't launch games from a USB drive when using WiiVC injects like this. If there are any Wii or GC (with Nintendont) games you also want with gamepad support you have to inject them as WiiVC directly, or put them on SD where WiiFlow can still see them (but USB Loader GX doesn't support Wii games on SD)

It's so weird you say that you tried to inject it into the GameCube Zelda collection only to get a black screen, because I tried the exact same thing last week as well to the same result. I gave it 2 attempts at that, one where the new file size replaced the old file size and another where it builds dummy data to fill up to the same exact file size of OoT on disc. Both attempts yielded the same failed result unfortunately.

I tried the wad+injector method, and both cc-emulation options result in the game booting to a screen saying "you will need the classic controller" at which point the entire system locks up... Now does the injector mention that some titles would require some kind of patch to be applied to the wad, but the link that should open a page with instructions just sends me to the Google frontpage :rofl2:.

Anyone got some tips/tricks or possibly another method to getting this rom hack to go on U?

Hello MikaDubzz, i also have a copy of ''The Missing Link'', but i can see the c buttons clearly, i've downloaded the original TLOZ OOT rom from emuparadise with tampermonkey then i merged the 2 files, i have no issues with this game fortunately, i can send u a (missing) link if u like? : ).

And it appears and play this way when injected into a VC title, and installed to the Wii U menu, c-buttons showing up and all?

Hehe viva Hollandia :rofl2:

You do realize that you're posting in the Wii U-forum? I (and I assume @MikaDubbz as well) are looking for a version of TML to install to our Wii U system menu :P I also have an .n64 rom and a Wii .wad, but I am looking for a way to play the rom hack on my U gamepad B-)

There is no proper n64 emu for wii U, the only non-VC emulation option would be to use Wii64 or Not64 (both wii homebrew) in overclocked vWii which will not work (properly) with the gamepad (because the vWii doesn't know what a gamepad is as it was not around yet when the wii system menu was written :rofl2:)

As to how to PM somebody, you just click or tap on somebody's username and then on Send PM

The wad is very choppy on vWii, plays A LOT smoother when injected but as stated, c buttons are gone! Tried forcing classic controller with teconmoons inject but just sticks at 'you will need the classic controller' screen.....

Tried with Wii64Rice, plays well, c buttons are visible but there is a bit of a texture/gfx spaz out when entering the first area. Saw it again when exiting Saria's house so I'm guessing it's gonna be in other areas and probably at a bit of the game when you REALLY dont need it to! Also, certain items on pause screen are gone aswell the alphabet when inputing your name at the start!

Shame, the reviews for this are quite good but I refuse to play it on vWii with classic controller!!! I want gamepad

Guess I'll go with the inject and maybe google the songs.

Hi Lostbhoy, I’m sorry to hear this : (, i tried my best to merge the 2 zelda files of the missing link, maybe you can merge another one with the links i provide??, another rom of the same game does sometime the trick (less choppy i mean), i’ll also look for other better possibilities : ).

My wad does the same on Wii U side, but once you try it in the vWii it works fine so the issue is 100% wii U related

I only tried the wad on vWii. The inject I'm using is an N64 inject. (tried with OoT and a pokemon rom?!?! With same results)

Granted the gfx are fine on vWii, all present but the sound and gameplay is choppy/sticky/a lil bit slow if you compare them both. Apart from the c button loss, the inject is flawless in sound and gameplay speed.

This is just my preference however, i wanna play with the gamepad as i hate having to play on the tv unless im playing something with my kids...... Usimg the gamepad as a screen and wiimotes is horrible imo!!

Again just me tho!

Hey guys, just a reminder, you can discuss about the romhack and share patches just fine, however cannot ask for links to roms, or offer links, even in private messages.

This also includes prepatched wads and injected virtual console titles.

Now carry on with the discussion. :)

Little update...

On the n64 rom inject I've made it into the desert town and the health hearts and C buttons have magically appeared!
BUT inside the temple with the Gerudo Guards they have disappeared again and the Saria Sword beam doesn't appear anywhere.

So, very intermittent this problem and I suppose would pose a problem to newcomers. Going back to the vWii wad, It's not as choppy as I first encountered but the sound is a bit annoying. I'd now recommend this version to anyone wishing to play without gfx glitches.
