Hacking Question Is it safe to do a controller update?

I just updated my Switch to 6.0 with ChoiDujourNX so I can downgrade again, but I have this Controller nag to update their firmware.
Is it safe to update the controllers (will it burn efuses) or is there any other way?

The Joycons have their own firmware so there's no e fuses for them to burn. However if you have certain hardware mods on your joycon(like pin bridging) there is a risk that your joycon will stop working

When you connect a joycon to a switch with the newest firmware and you do a joycon firmware update on it. Does anyone know if they will stop working on an older firmware (4.0.1) then?

after updating my switch to 6.0, i have to update my joycons.

My right Joycon is modded, so i have to reboot the switch 3 times, and desynchronize, then resynchronize my right joycon several times to make it work again. It was a pain in the ass due to this new firmware, but it works now.

I found it yesterday while doing a Google search about the topic. I thought it was better to bring it up than create a new one about the exact same question, mostly cause it was never answered.
I hacked my console and joined the scene literally two months ago. My Switch was on HOS 10.0.2 when I did it, so I'm not aware of any method to update the joycons since I haven't been through any major update yet.

There isn't any negatives to updating your Joy-Cons unless you soldered pins 9 & 10 together. And the updates are applied to the Joy-Cons not the system which doesn't even matter since OFW and CFW are just modes.

No, what I said was the updates to the Joy-Cons are applied to the Joy-Cons themselves so they'll be carried over to whatever console uses them regardless if its using CFW or OFW. What many people don't know is that Joy-Con updates are not downloaded online; they are actually included in the firmware updates themselves. Meaning if you update the firmware offline such as with a homebrew application or game, the Joy-Con update can also be applied offline.

Unless a joycon has been physically modified, updating them is completely safe and recommended. If a joycon's pins have been modified (which was a fad back when people didn't have jigs), it should be updated wirelessly.

Thanks for the confirmation. I updated my joy-cons last night in OFW and everything seems alright in CFW after the update.
I am always paranoid with Big N sneakily offering updates which would mess up with my SX Cored Mariko.

One of mine goes battery low after being on the unit for a while, I am suspecting a battery failing but, wanted to double check before going to buy a replacement battery, maybe a firmware update will fix it..

I believe you can do it from System Settings.
