Next-Gen Poll: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X?

PS5 vs XBSX GBAtemp Poll.png

It’s been about a week since we got a look at what games will be playable on the Xbox Series X; a couple of weeks after the PlayStation 5's own showcase aired. We now have a better idea as to what titles to expect from each next-gen console. Even if more details and games will be revealed in the coming months, we can already appreciate what each console has to offer in terms of games, features and specs. So how about a poll to see which console you'll more likely pick up? Before making a decision, let's roundup each console's features and games!

PlayStation 5

Sony was relatively tight-lipped when it came to news of the PS5. First it revealed the logo, then the controller’s design and some specs. We only got a look at the consoles during its Future of Gaming event in June. And yes, I used consoles in plural because there will be two editions of the PS5: a regular one with the optical disc and a Digital Edition.

So let’s see what Sony has to offer in terms of specs and games for next-gen gaming!

Featured games

Right, what are specs without games? Sony had quite a lot to show during its Future of Gaming event from Demon's Souls Remake through a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn to the trippy Bugsnax. Here’s a highlight reel or if you wish to watch the full event, head here:

It’s good to note that while these games are planned for a PS5 release, not all of them will be available this year or even next. Moreover, not all will be console exclusives, so PC or Xbox gamers will be able to experience some of the same games shown here.

Xbox Series X

Compared to Sony, Xbox was more open about its next-gen console. By the time Sony only revealed the PS5 logo, we already had a detailed look at the Xbox Series X hardware. While Sony has confirmed two versions of the PS5, Xbox has only revealed only one version of its next Xbox. However, recent leaks suggest that Microsoft is also planning multiple iteration of its next-gen console.

Now, let’s see what has been touted as “the most powerful console ever” packs.

Featured games

Oddly enough, when Xbox shared the first look of games for its new console, it went for indie and third-party titles rather than first party games. However, last week we got a look at those first-party games such as the anticipated Halo Infinite, a new RPG from Obsidian and a new Fable teaser. Check out the highlight reel below or the full event here:

Your choice

While we have much more information about these consoles than previously, a lot is still unknown. Firstly, we don’t have any official information regarding the pricing of those next-gen consoles. This leaves a lot to speculate about. How much would you be willing to pay for a brand-new console in 2020? Additionally, an exact release date has yet to be announced, other than a planned ‘Holiday 2020’ window.

But it’s safe to say that you should start saving if you want to be among the first to enjoy next-gen console gaming. So which one will be your pick based on what we know so far? And do share what led to your decision below!

Both of then, but definitely start with Series X. Far best console, 12 teraflops vs 9 of ps5 (10 in boost) mode. And that it's a huge gap. I love the Game Pass, and features like Xbox Rewards. Love much more the games, never trade Halo and Gears for any franchise the playstation have. As a main console to play the multiplataforms better than they will look in ps5, and of course, the full retrocompatibility with enhanced graphics and FPS on Xbox One, the major games of 360 and OG Xbox too.

Definitely PS5 for me. I skipped over ps4/xbone, mostly due to there being just not enough games i'd warrant buying a console for. But with PS4 now having a steady library of good exclusives I'd like to play, and PS5 looking promising in regards to backwards compatibility, I'm most likely going to buy a PS5. Bloodborne + Demon's Souls remake might also be a big factor :)

Honestly we dont need next gen consoles for 2 more years (The games look marginally better anyways). Its very clear that they both arent ready to put out quality software and produce enough of the damned things.

I dont really care about this whole console war. All my purchases and friends are on Playstation. If I was to buy the Xbox, I would have nothing

Well for me I skipped the PS4 so I have an incentive to get a PS5 but only to play the exclusives . But right now I do like a lot what the Xbox has to offer a system designed with SSD will feel so snappy it will completely change gaming and the A.I to make older games look and play better is what we have always wanted the next gen machine to do . The only thing Xbox Studios better have a $hit ton of games in development because Sony has the upper hand .

In the end I’m a gamer so I’ll have them all :yay:

how is both not a poll option this is a gaming site...

anyway my thoughts are like usual I'll get at least one of each of the major consoles.

I always tend to preorder new hardware worst-case scenario living rural its nice to have it day one and if buyers remorse happens there is either flipping it for profit and/or 30+day return policy (considering its likely within holiday returns season hypothetically that goes till the end of January at most retailers)so... buying is a no brainer.

depending on finances i typically like to buy 2 so i can keep one on a low firmware for future modding/resale value or once again potential flipping for some profit (i don't go crazy with flipping but it tends to pay for my next batch of accessories and a game or two)

I'm hoping this console launch is more like the 360-ps3 era for flipping thanks to kungflu related supply chain restrictions rather than the XB1 ps4 launch but we shall see...

I doubt i'll get the digital editions, they are a stupid proposition.

the people that want to save money on a system will want the disk drive for things including but not limited to backward compatibility, used games, the ability to be a UHD movie player, etc.

in order for digital editions to be worth it, they'd need to be significantly cheaper say $200ish cheaper, but knowing sony and M$ they are more likely to be $50 cheaper, and that's not worth it even for the market its aimed at considering the downsides.

As of now, leaning more towards XBox, simply due to how much its developers to offer in terms of consumer-friendliness. From promised complete backwards compatibility, to cheap subscription service with sizeable library of games, to free multiplayer (if recent claims and signs are correct). Sure, I'll miss out on some exclusives, but if that means not dealing with some of the BS when it comes to pricing and usability, I'm all in - not to mention Sony still didn't roll out any PS5 announcements that could potentially intrigue me in the future. That, and if installing homebrew applications on XBSX will be as easy as it was on XOne, then buying it over PS5 is a no-brainer for me.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Why not just get a PC at this point? Those boxes are just glorified PCs and don't let you do much other than playing approved games.
Price aside, consoles are more stable overall - since games are tailor-made for them, I never have to deal with all the little bugs and glitches that pop up on random PC games for bizarre reasons and require all the driverino-messaroo. And yes, I know it's much less of a problem nowadays than it was 10-15 years ago, but it's still a nuisance from time to time (just for example, I had to deal with UE3 games overheating on my PC due to one minor driver acting dumb on me). With console games, I always know what I'll get and how it will perform on my device, which is a major selling point for me personally.

How so?

Without being a fanboy explain.
I guess there are many other ways to compare it that may seem more relevant.
E.g.
  • Aesthetics: both look like crap but I prefer the Xbox.
  • Software line-up and exclusives: based on what they have shown up to now PS5 by far looks more interesting.
  • Personal preference/bias: historically I prefer Xbox hardware, gamepads and OS, and that is a preference.
  • Perceived hardware reliability: to me pushing the clock of the PS5 CPU/GPU and making it variable based on power seems like a last ditch effort from Sony to compensate for the difference in performance, and the problem with this is that quite probably the hardware is not really designed for extracting the extra bit of performance... I perceive that failure rate will be a topic.
  • Perceived intention of the company supporting the platform: Hmmmmm.... I believe Sony is more likely to go the extra effort in order to keep the platform alive against the odds, they did it well with the PS3.

Whatever people do, a gaming quality PC should be their first option, always.

No reason for a XSX when it will have no exclusives. (I will most likely get their pads though. Love the MS joysticks).
And exclusives are THE reason to even own a specific console to begin with, so...

Unless you want nothing from Sony, a better PC is the correct answer. Otherwise, get a PS5.

Other than that, I'm actually hoping for a new, good portable system to emerge.
PSVita was awesome and should have been given more love.

Here's hoping a Switch 2 isn't too far away,

Again i have no interest in a gaming PC of any kind at any price point.

Xbox Series X will be a day one purchase.
