Hello :)

I softmodded my PAL Wii last year using the modmii software. Unfortunately the Region Free hacks doesn't work correctly on this console. This applies to both GameCube and Wii titles (all original discs). The games either will not boot at all, or they will boot with visual glitches or wrong video modes. Paper Mario (US) will not boot at all. F-Zero GX (US) will boot, but in 576i even when I hold B for progressive scan, and in Metroid Prime the background is completely missing in the options menu :/

I have tried following the modmii tutorial again reinstalling everything, but that did not help. Tonight I also tried updating priiloader to 0.9b4, but that didn't help either.

I'm fairly sure I used to own another PAL Wii that didn't have these issues. So what's going on here?

I know that I can boot these games using USBloader and similar, but that's a hassle. I would like to use the original menu :)

I appreciate the suggestion, but I would really rather have the stock menu working.

I'm sure I had this working years ago on the other system, because I took the pictures on RetroRGB showing the difference between 480p on Wii and GameCube.

Did you have connected your Wii with the standard A/V Cable or an Component or HDMI (Adapter) Cable please ? :)

I have installed the Wii Dual kit in my system, but have it hooked up with component cables to my OSSC. This shouldn't make any difference for the Wii, as it's completely oblivious of this mod :)

Also there is no audio playing when the games doesn't boot so it's not a video problem :)

I am not familiar with the Dual Wii (Kit/Mod) but I think it is maybe a good Idea to contact @DacoTaco to get sure it has really nothing to do with it.:)
I am not sure if he considered this Mod when doing his Priiloader Development.....:(.

Thank you.:)

By the Way you can enable a Log File in Priiloader.
It is maybe also a good Idea to have it "by hand" when he give you Feedback.:)

The mod is quite recent, and besides offering HDMI out it also drastically improves the component video quality by bypassing the original video DAC, and offers chroma subsampling (less smeary colors). It's quite nice, although while it IS noticeably better than stock it's still not as good as 480p component out from a PS2 or Xbox. Nintendo really did go all out to ruin the video output on the Wii so there's only so much you can do :D

I will contact DacoTaco tomorrow as it's getting very late :D

Thank you both for trying to help me :)

did you also update the hacks file when updating to priiloader0.9 beta 4?
what system menu/wii are you running this on?

like suggested before, you should try and enable the dump debug setting (not hack, the setting) and show me the output of the prii.log on the sd card.

Hi DacoTaco :)

Apparently I did not update the hacks file (thought I did). I replaced it and got the new options. Unfortunately Regionfree EVERYTHING still doesn't boot Paper Mario US.
I'm using 4.3E on a PAL console.

I'm using 4.3E on a PAL console.

thanks for that. the addresses of the hack seem to be all wrong oddly enough and i'll fix the hack.

i wonder though, does the hack work on a wii that doesn't have 4.3E(PAL) ?

EDIT : nope, i was wrong. the hack is fine. it patches the same addresses as the old hack. i forgot to add the offset to my quick calculations before.
i guess the hack never worked for 4.3E?

EDIT2 : also tested the hack in dolphin with 4.3E and it worked there. i was using a different game though

One thing though. I did try switching region on this Wii to 4.3U as I would much rather have a US systems (Channels run in 50Hz on a PAL console). Could that have causes some problems?

Should I try using Dopmii or similar to restore the IOS files if anything was corrupted when I changed region?

I also have a NAND backup that I could try and restore.

Probably not necessary. Run ARC or the ARC modmii edition mod from here https://gbatemp.net/threads/help-test-new-tools-for-modmii-please.533855/

And look for any kind of mismatch, if so, just hit the fix button.

Careful, if used improperly region change tools can lead to brick

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, it can't hurt to post a Syscheck log

my wii knowledge is rusted, but depending on how the hack 'isn't working' (aka if it shows the game in system menu or not) i suspect its the hack/game acting up.

but i suppose a lot could be wrong

if anything i'd suggest to try an older ntsc game and see if that works.

Super Monkey Ball is probably the oldest US game I own. The game boots fine, but is running in 50Hz instead of 60Hz :/ Unfortunately the game freezes during the attract screen. Game is absolutely mint so this could perhaps be caused by the refresh mismatch?

I will look into ARC now and try that out. Thanks :)

EDIT: Tried Any Region Changer ModMii edition and used the fix option. The shop region was set wrong but otherwise everything was right. Super Monkey Ball still freezes in the same location :(

I only own one import Wii-title. Kirby collection (JAP), and unfortunately that has never been able to boot on any modded Wii I've tried it on. Only through USB loader will it work. So unfortunately I can't test more import Wii games on this console :/

Ideally what I would really like is to use ARC to change my console to a US/JAP system and use this hack to make it play PAL games. Because even with the region free hack on a PAL system, US and JAP channels will still boot in 50Hz on a PAL console. I don't ever want to play anything in 50Hz again :D
I have tried setting the consoles region to US using ARC in the past, and I believe it worked fine because RGB video got all red (no big deal as I'm using component anyway).

Unfortunately because the hack isn't working properly on my console I couldn't boot a large number of my Wii PAL games anymore, so I had to revert back to the EU region :(

EDIT2: Completely forgot about the syscheck that was suggested:
