Hacking Question HELP, did i permanently damage my switch lite

first of all i am a newbie and my first attemp to mod with sxlite, i was practicing today before my lite chip delivered by soldering small amount of tin lead by 30w soldering iron on the smd capacitor on top of tegra chip inside switch however when i try and tested my unit my switch was stuck at nintendo logo before booting up the worst is my chip became super hot did i permanently damage it? can it be fix by a reflow or some sort ?

I agree that paste is important, but just the lack of paste wouldn't cause the same issues that he is getting. True, it would overheat like OP said, but the fact that it's not even getting past the boot screen and heating up means there is something else very wrong.

From my experience building and repairing consoles and PCs, you definitely never want to not have paste (obviously), but unless you're operating in a place with an extremely high ambient temperature it shouldn't prevent you from booting at all.

yes its my bad, i was excited in putting the sxlite and tried to put small tin above, the smd capacitor i might loosen the connection or something or bend something, anyway now its booting but stuck on switch logo and still keeps the ic chip getting hot,
needed to remove the battery so it wont damage other stuff due to overheat, i think it was shorted or something,

i tried first booting without one just to see if it canboot not that long like about 30 sec, then when it did not pass the joycon logo then restart i pullout the battery and placed all the parts, thermal paste and heatsink still the same, and the power ic chip is acting weird even it was not turn on, it was getting hot

I think I’m pretty good at soldering but I wouldn’t go near this - you need an expert to do fit this (at least with a precise iron and lead solder). However that’s not too helpful at this point - there must be some damage, you may need to magnify to spot it

thank you, by the looks of what i have attached it was showing a similar damage seen on gpu with loosen solder, fix usually by reflow, this was just just my speculation since i dont have magnifying glass and other tools, yeah i will send the device to a professional by tommorow,

Well the cap does look discolored. Possibly shorted and or other possible damage like bridges somewhere. Without the proper testing and soldering tools, having someone with more experience is defiantly the way to go as you already mentioned. Hopefully it’s just a burnt cap and replacing it resolves your issue.

Oh I’m certain he’s still lurking somewhere.. I’m lucky I know so many people who are great at this so I just offer up a 4-pack of lager and watch them work! It is a skill, with practice you can get good at it.

Edit: Of course I’ll do it myself unless it’s tiny, precise expensive electronics. Which this is.

Lead solder is important, it is more precise and has a much lower melting temp. Unfortunately it’s now illegal to buy in the EU, but you can get it if you search for it!

My hands shake when I am trying to install and solder the sxcore so gave up and went to my friend and gave him 20 bucks to install my sx core. Lol the sx lite is a totally different beast in terms of soldering. Btw here in Singapore 20 bucks got me two sx core soldered in less than 10 mins.
