Citra Emulator for Android gets its first official release

W4giDuh.png

Ever wanted to play Nintendo 3DS games on your Android device? Well, the Citra development team has just made your dreams reality, with their brand new release of Citra Android. The hard work from many different developers, including ones who have previously worked on Dolphin and Yuzu, has culminated in a beta version of the official build of Citra that you can grab from the Google Play Store for free. Running Citra on your phone or tablet will require, at minimum, Android 8 Oreo and support for OpenGL ES 3.2. Having a snapdragon 835 chip is recommended in order to get the best performance possible, but isn't mandatory. The Android version of the emulator even has features such as microphone support, camera support for scanning QR codes, and was shown running Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Fire Emblem: Fates, and more, in addition to certain Virtual Console titles.

What Works and What Doesn’t?
The app is still in beta. So, while we have tried to squash the bugs we’ve come across, you may still run into the occasional glitch. If you run into any major problems, please report them to us on our Discord server or forum and we will try to organise them.

The app requires a minimum of 64-bit Android 8 (Oreo), and OpenGL ES 3.2 support. These are relatively high requirements; however, they allow us to ensure that every device that can run Citra will have a reasonably good experience. As for hardware, we recommend a device with a Snapdragon 835 or better. Your experience may vary greatly depending on the quality of your device’s GPU drivers.

For added fun, you can use this to run the Daedalus64 emulator on your phone!
You could also get a Mac and use Virtualbox for linux, then get Wine to run Bluestacks, and then run deadlaus within Citra.

Also this is great
Maybe someday they’ll just make everything free on Android?

Why don't you just run Wine on WSL on Windows while you're at it

Pretty lame how they're locking features behind a paywall

Oh my you guys dont wanna pay for anything  some emulators such as the PS1 and DS and Neo Geo and PS2 emulator you have to pay for (I paid for them) I mean there is the apk but for $5 bucks support the guys behind the emulators for them to continue their work.

Except you should not pay for any PS2 emulator. The developers of said emulator are scumbags profiting from open source code.

has anyone tried this on switch?
Jit & hardware rendering do not work which means terrible frame rate

It's not that bad. I'm getting full speed on OoT 3D with a Snapdragon 845. 2x resolution is no good though. Probably much better on the 855 and 865.
You probably have a samsung galaxy a20 or some expensive shit
Citra requires a good PC to run and PCs already have way better cooling
Aren't your hands burning from holding that thing in your hand?

I paid $10 bucks I think its been a while I don't remember but I personally don't mind. I probably used it maybe once just to try it out I don't think it ran the game that I wanted to play.

They can get the shittiest pcs to run dolphin and pcsx2 yet we need an s9 or above to run dolphin at a level somewhat close to pc and ps2 is complete shit.

Great, now I can play all of my 3DS games at unplayable speeds.
Disregarding performance, this is definitely a great achievement for the Citra devs.

yea, anything above dreamcast is not meant for phones
unless you have some 900$ case that reduces overheating or some shit
This is why i support the G-Boy as a way to play wii/gcn portably even though dolphin is a thing on phones (and the fact you need electrical engineering knowledge to even start making it)

that would probably make a lot of little kids think that they cant run 3ds games on their tablet, only for them to release that their shitty under powered kindle dies withing a frame of gameplay. Even better, they would try it on their parents phone only for the thing to melt
Oof. Yeah, I’ll stick with my CFW 3DS and/or decent-power Windows laptop, thanks.
(Besides, I don’t have any Android devices.)
