No gyro? Like I get why it wouldn't have the IR camera (though it'd be all the better if it did) or NFC reader, but the lack of gyro makes these things useless for a fair amount of games. The ad says, compatabile with all games that can be played with a single Joy-Con. Yeah, bullshit. You wont get far playing Super Mario Party with these joy con replacements.

No D-Pad = Sucks

Well why would a controller meant to replace a single joy-con held on it's side have a d-pad? Don't get me wrong, these controllers leave a lot to be desired, but it makes perfect sense why there is no d-pad for these controllers.

Well don't get ME wrong, but to me a controller without a D-Pad is not a controller on its own...but i get the point.

Sure, I guess, but if you put a d-pad into a joycon held on its side, and the Switch recognizes it as a joycon, then that d-pad will not be usable it will just sit there without being usable. To complain about a third party of such controller not having this feature is misguided, if you want a sideways joy-con to also have a D-pad you should complain about the official original controller.

Maybe they could program it so that a D-pad is recognized as a duplicate of the joystick, but that's not really the same as what you really want.

Now, they could make a stripped down pro controller and have the Switch recognize it as a pro controller with only these same buttons plus a d-pad, but then this becomes incompatible as a replacement for a single joy-con.

My only complaint about the Steam Controller. I hope for a hypothetical SC 2 where you can swap the touchpad on the left out with a standard d-pad or something. Either that, or maybe an analog d-pad? Analog enough to where it'll determine pressure on the button being pressed as being the difference between walking and running in most games!

im simply saying that controller (in general) to me is not a controller without default layout FIRST than whatever it needs second. (L, R, D-Pad, 4 buttons, Start) Snes is a good example of classic must have layout for me. everything else is extra. Im not really commenting this controller in particular i just saw it has no D-Pad and to me thats a failure.

I mean I guess, but it does make sense at the end of the day. I don't look at the joycons and think they're also lacking D-pads, because of the nature of what they are, 2 halves of a whole full controller, that can happen to be adapted work for many experiences for 2 people when split in half. Now if the left joy-con's 4 face buttons should be a D-pad, that's an argument I can at least understand, but again, I get why it's not that way because of how those 4 directions become the 4 face buttons when being played with individually.

At the end of the day, there is no perfect way for 2 joy-cons to exist has both a full controller and 2 individual controllers, but it seems to me like it finds the right balance to make it work well enough. And by having a proper separate Pro controller, I find their existence and layout all the more excusable. With that in mind, it isn't hard then to understand why 3rd party versions would have to have similar layouts if they too want to be recognized as joy con controllers.

It's missing R, ZR, L and ZL. Kirby Star Allies uses those even when using a single Joy Con to play, which is dumb, but those buttons are still missing on these controllers.
