6 years later CleanRip is back with a much needed update to address some issues - most of the changes are from other contributors which is nice to see :)

DAT files are hosted on gc-forever.com and CleanRip can automatically download these from a Wii but failing that, grab the files from redump.org or from the Releases page here.

Changes in this release:

  • Fix crash on verify disk and other minor fixes (@ac90b671 / @mrahm)
  • Fix DAT downloading issue (Wii DAT is > 1MB) (@ThadHouse)
  • Add SD2SP2 (GameCube Serial Port 2) support (@ThadHouse)
  • Add Datel disc dumping support (@greyrogue)
  • Fix build issues/warnings with latest devKitPPC (@spycrab & @emukidid)
  • Disable DAT downloading from GameCube (no DNS support) (@emukidid)
  • Fix message prompts not appearing (@emukidid)

Can you dump GameCube games on a non-Gamecube-compatible Wii?
Yes and no - an horizontal Wii is 100% software compatible with a vertical one (you can even solder the GC connectors back in), however the optical drives installed at the factory lack the 10 cents of parts required to accept miniDVDs (you can replace the drive, though)

Just to clarify, it's not a lack of parts on the horizontal Wii, but the addition of some metal and plastic. There's an extra bit of metal toward the back (which can easily be bent back) and a plastic mechanism guiding piece (no idea what it's called) that normally has grooves/tracks for 12cm and 8cm discs but instead has the 8cm track filled/blocked (which can be cut to restore the 8cm track).

NANASHI89: There are 8cm to 12cm disc adapters that work so you don't necessarily have to modify or swap the drive. The only one that I know by model number is the Sony CSA-8. Others definitely exist that were bundled with some old CD singles that were released on mini/8cm CDs.

On my GC-compatible Wii, never had an issue dumping GC games, and I did quite a few.

Exactly. The Install Option from USBLoader GX is unfortunately not a 100 Percent reliable Alternative.:(

Yeah, it's a bit disappointing because it rips them in WBFS format which is handy for quick use, but it froze on me 80% of the time, I got a handful games properly ripped at least.

While CleanRip does a full ISO so it takes longer, I rather have a longer but reliable way than a shortcut that fails, not to mention full ISO is useful if you have in mind modifying the game afterwards.

Some Users reported they changed the Loader´s IOS from 58 to 249 or vice versa. And then it worked for them.:)
