My sons 2DS turned on to the blue screen with Bootrom 8046.

Errcode: 00F800FE
00000000 00000000
00000200 00000000

I followed the 3DS Hacks Guide a few months ago to run Luma3DS. I’ve followed this guide several times to mod about 5 or 6 different systems, and never had any problems.

It’s not hardmodded, and aside from what’s in that guide, no other modifications have been made. I don’t know what happened, is it bricked?

I have backups of everything, is there any way to recover it? It’s an original 2DS, not the XL.

You'll need this to fix it (buy a pre-flashed flashcard).
https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot.html

You can also hardmod it and restore the nand, but that isn't recommended except for people with good soldering experience.

Actually, looking at this, it would appear someone may have already tried to hardmod it:

I would be extremely surprised if someone tried to hardmod it. I bought it used, but it was from a kid and it seemed totally stock. Even had a parental PIN on it.

I’ll look into a flashcart I guess. I have a SKY3DS but that doesn’t seem to be what it requires, and my old Acekard2i probably isn’t compatible either, if it’s even laying around.

“Error when having SD-card reader connected to NAND during boot.”

I’m not entirely sure what that even means.

Part of the hardmodding process is wiring an sd card adapter to the motherboard's nand pinouts and reading/writing data to the nand to mod it. When you boot up the system with wires attached, you get that error code - but you can flash the nand in that state.

Hmmmm... well I can pretty much guarantee that’s not the problem. And it’s been running fine for months until today. So I guess I can look into a flashcart. Any idea what the probability is that it can be fixed that way?

Just wondering if I risk the $20 for a cart or just see if I can find another used system for $50.

Thanks for the quick help. My son isn’t going to like the answer but that’s the risk of modding a system I suppose.

You're welcome.
The odds of you fixing the system with ntrboot are really high. From looking around, I've noticed people with non-hardmodded systems get that error too.

The wait is about 2-3 weeks from the retailer listed in that guide (modchipsdirect is about a week since it's us-based instead of china, however).

One more question. Will this flashcart work?

EDIT: I just realized if I don't buy one that is pre-flashed with ntrboot that I need access to either a stock 3ds or NDS right? That complicates things even further.

Ew, newegg. That's the shitty R4iSDHC series. It works as ntrboot but for $12, it's overpriced. You're better off with the R4i Gold 3DS Plus.

* If you insist on that specific flashcart, see my $5 aliexpress signature.

I’m just looking for the cheapest, easiest flashcart I can find to get this thing working again. Can you PM me a suggestion if you have one? Would really appreciate it.

You can't have both cheapest and easiest.
  • Easiest to use would be the R4i Gold 3DS Plus. It has an internal switch that changes between DS mode and ntrboot mode. On top of that, it uses the nice looking WOOD kernel user interface.
  • Cheapest to purchase would be the R4iSDHC series. This one requires a working (o/n)(2/3)DS(i)(XL/LL)(phat/lite) system to reflash it with the ntrboot rom. Also, it comes with a shitty time bomb.
I personally recommend the US $20 flashcart for better long term experience. However, it's understandable not everyone can afford that. The choice is up to you, just keep in mind those pros and cons.

See my signature in row ◆ ntrboot flashcarts.
