I updated my Switch to 8.1 finally. Used the official Ninty servers to update (don't care about fuses tbh). Now it will not boot. At all. As in no RCM. It booted once right after the update to the atmosphere screen and then booted (never went cold reboot or power off). Now it just will not boot at all.

I have my right joy con modded with the 9\10 pin short (always worked up till now).
I had autorcm enabled as it updated (but usually that just means it'll disable autorcm).
Battery was at 73% during the update.
I held the power button for 20 seconds and my android isn't detecting the Switch at all. Have not tried my laptop yet.

Any ideas as to why I can't get into RCM mode? Help?

Bet you haven't updated to the latest Atmosphere?

Also helped my friend with a similar issue this week and his android wouldn't work at all he was stumped. I talked him through installing tegrarcmgui and the libusbk driver on his pc and it booted first time.

This is odd..
and you shouldn't have updated through the system settings.
Do you happen to have made a NAND backup prior to this happening by the way?
Have you tried booting your Switch without an SD card inserted.
Try using a jig or a paperclip.
and you said you used a joycon mod? here's hoping it didn't fry the switch's motherboard.

Joycon mood takes the place of a jig. It's been modded for almost 4 months now. Haven't tried taking the sd card out honestly. Lol Had a NAND backup too my external hard drive crashed earlier this week. But I can't even get into RCM.

I updated to the newest atmos just prior to the update. Thinking about deleting the folders and reinstalling from scratch tho. But, I haven't tried my laptop yet tho the libusbk driver is set up already.

Some very good things to try when I get home. Thank you for the ideas. Will keep you posted, no pun.

Consider doing a full SDcard format on fat32 with guiformat and while at it check your card for errors with H2testw.
sometimes starting CFW install fresh back on square one might help.
if it helps try unplugging the battery as well.

I'm just concerned about the switch trying to delete the content. I switched from a 128 to a 256 and had to reinstall ALL my games because it deleted all the content on boot (thought it was corrupted I think). But otherwise I'm down to start fresh provided my Nintendo and homebrew folders don't go haywire. I am already on FAT32 tho. Maybe that's why everything got nuked when I swapped cards? I went from exFAT to FAT32.

And by unplug the battery, I assume you mean opening it and pulling the clip? I was thinking about that earlier tbh. Oh, it also does accept a charge, so that's at least a good sign.

If it accepts a charge unplugging the battery probably won't help.

When it comes to atmosphere I always find it better to just do a fresh install rather than copy paste over the older files.

I finally got it to boot. Now it won't detect that my right controller is connected. Thinks it's Bluetooth yet charging at the same time. Never been an issue since 6.x. Hmmm...

Also, my phone won't detect it either now. Only my laptop.

EDIT

Just noticed that it still says RCM when connected to the PC even when it is booted.

Not surprised there, nintendo's later firmwares has also block modified joycons.

I finally got everything working. A combination of all the advice here.

First I tried without the sd card. Then unplugged and replugged the battery. Now my laptop seen the RCM but my phone still didn't. I boot Hekate. I learn that the update kept autorcm on but was trying to act like it was off (hence the "dead" thing it was doing). I toggle autorcm off then on again and phone can see it.

Ok. So it boots. Now the switch wont let the right joy con connect. It sees it has only wireless docked mode instead of handheld, even tho its plugged in. Played with the sync options... Nothing. Pulled the solder mod, it still didnt do anything but this time syncing it fixed it. Great. Getting stuff fixed. Now lets try a game... Everything is corrupt. Ok, maybe I forgot the patches. It happens. Nope. So ultimately with this convoluted mess of non patched patches being patched, I reinstalled atmosphere from the ground up with cosmos (I know, I know). And also put ReiNX as a back up. I archive flag fix and it helped. About 60% worked but the other 40% dont work still (corrupted). Cosmos does the job very well. Everything works again now. ^___^

I didnt realize a simple update can kill so many things. @__@ Not even 2 hours before I posted here, it was a perfectly good working console. Crazy.

I'm glad you got it working in end.
I knew it unplugging the battery would do the trick thus helping you enter RCM again.

About the joycons, modded joycons and newer firmwares don't tend to get along together. You're lucky it didn't seem to render your joycon useless.
Did you apply the latest joycon update in the controllers menu by the way?

Yeah kosmos is the noob package that got everything already set up. Fixing the archive bit alters the Nintendo folder I believe.
If you've still got corrupted games simply re install them.

I have been overwriting the files for months now without issue to update Atmosphere and the latest sig patches.
For me sometimes it runs, sometimes it blackscreens, and sometimes I get sigpatches error, so I just started the habit of doing a fresh install every new release and never experience any issues eversince.

I did do the updates. I have nand backups of the original 6.x firmwares for those tho. I agree Kosmos is n00b but everything is working. That's the important part. And things are no longer corrupt. ^___^

Ok. One more thing... I forgot to extract home before installing the theme... It doesn't get past the Kosmos bootlogo. Should I just replace everything again?
