So, once my new DSi XL arrives on August 8th, I'll install custom firmware on it as soon as I can. A little while after that, I'll be spending the weekend on an island with a friend of mine. I won't be bringing my phone since my sister needs it. However, my mom still needs a way to communicate with me in case of emergencies. Since I'll be bringing my hacked DS, I thought it might be a good idea to find a homebrew messaging program that I could use in case of emergency. All the ones I've found so far seem to be outdated. Is there an SMS client? A Facebook Messenger client? If there aren't any of those, then what about email? I don't really use email that much anymore, but I will if I need to.

Buy a pre-paid phone and use that

For future reference, there is the DS Browser that might work for email.
DSHobro might work if you have a computer that will provide the actual web browsing.
DSOrganize also has a web browser, recommended to use the birthday edition though.
SvSIP might also work. I tried it once upon a time. It was kind of garbage, but it kinda worked.
JabberDS is a jabber client that maybe works? Never tried it since I never had an xmpp server.

I know that Gmail works on the 3DS browser, I just didn't know it worked on the DSi's browser. Thanks!
And yeah, in case anyone thinks I'm talking about the original DS or the DS Lite, I'm actually talking about the DSi.

The DSi is irrelevant because nobody cared about it
What do you mean? I was clarifying that I was specifically talking about DSi homebrew in my post, not homebrew for the original DS or DS Lite, since that's what Idontknowwhattoputhere seemed to think. I just didn't want to seem like I was asking a stupid question.

If your mum is the one that needs some kind of emergency contact* why does she not foot the bill for something? Someone will surely have an old phone in a drawer somewhere that they don't mind potentially losing that you can in turn stick a cheap/pay as you go sim card into.

This is also going to be mostly one way as well -- that is to say your mum calling you to do tell you about something going wrong back in the world (assuming you need to know that sort of thing). Do not take a piece of gear without long range communications into a situation where it is your main/primarily mode of communications/emergency contact if you reckon you need such things.
Also are you reliably going to have wireless access? If you have the means to make a hotspot then you presumably have better means of communications, you will also want to make sure said hotspot supports WEP and no encryption, and works with the DS/DSi as they can be quite picky and I have noticed even among newer routers which can be persuaded to use WEP/no crypto that they are increasingly not working again..

As was mentioned the DSi never really saw a homebrew boom, and what we did see was mostly about using its extra power to make emulators better or maybe tap the cameras for something. To that end everything you will be using aside from the weak as you like DSi onboard browser will be running in DS mode for this one.
Back on topic then I don't know what will work currently. Quite a few communications protocols had DS versions made for them, but that was years ago and most were not kept up to date and many things will have changed and no longer work aside from good old IRC (cliric being a good choice here). After this we are doing things like having you write a text document, upload it via FTP and waiting for a reply document/edit. That or hoping some kind of web portal, or bridge service (IM companies are complete cunts these days and like to close off their protocols rather than having open or bridge services but we can save that one for another day). Said portal/bridge is also the only way SMS (as in the thing phones are noted for) is going to happen as well -- the DS family all lacking the hardware to speak to the phone network.

*I tend not to have any communications on me when I go wandering (or day to day life), but as I am not a master medic or anything time sensitive like that, and "last words" seldom contain anything of great interest, then anything "urgent" can wait until I get back. I find people are too concerned about such things these days.
