Microsoft and Sony will be partnering up in order to advance cloud-based services

Not since the first appearance of a Sonic game on a Nintendo console have we seen such a shocking partnership, as Microsoft and Sony have announced that they'll be working together in order to make advancements in cloud gaming. The two rivals will put aside their differences, at least when it comes specifically to Microsoft Azure and cloud-powered services. As referred to in the press release, Sony will be assisting the development of Microsoft's cloud technology in exchange for being able to apply it, likely to their PlayStation Now and PlayStation Vue services.

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by the parties, the two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services. By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers. These efforts will also include building better development platforms for the content creator community.

This partnership is especially curious, as it comes somewhat after the reveal of the all-streaming Google Stadia, and in the midst of both companies gearing up for the switch into the next gaming generation.

Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.

Lots of Sony haters, oh wait, is that par for the course on gbatemp? It will help with online, all these idiotic conspiracies about losing “more” access to your games is dumb.

The quote about content-streaming is right there. Its not like they need massive azure servers to run matchmaking and achievements better.

What a joke. It's been proven time and time again that game streaming isn't possible. If you live beside a server, cool, good for you. 75% of the gamers in the world can not use this. Multiplayer games will be 100% unplayable due to players having different latency. Hopefully cross play doesn't happen. If a Ps5 does not have native support for Xbox controllers and keyboard/mouse, then Ps5 should not do cross play. Same goes for Xbox. If a game drops frames on one console but not the other, there should be no cross play. Microsoft just needs to get out of the game console business period. Why even have a console if your entire library of games are shared with a PC?

Proven by whom? And why else would such big companies invest in it. Surely the market won't be as much competitive gamers as single player games. And it won't be a solution for everyone. Certainly not for the glorious PC gamer master race with high framerates and low response times. But most gamers play at 30fps and care little more than a high resolution, if that much and will hardly notice any input lag with a decent connection. With the ever increasing high speed internet market, many more than enough will be able to jump on the bandwagon.

Latency is inevitable. It's been proven thousands of times over. The ISP discrepancies (speed, latency) are not a secret. If you play online games at all you already know this. It's not something you can argue. Game streaming is NOT ready for prime time and won't be for a while. Also, the input lag is 100% noticeable. Especially in fast paced games.

No cross play because of lack of Xbox controller support? Uhhhh... Okay.. Mmm

Inevitable really Gaming just ain't the same on Consoles nothing really unique anymore
PCs and Tablets Mobile Devices.

The things we take for granted nowadays.
Imagine Mario on PS5 or Halo even God of War on XBOX.

Things is heading that way PCs and Low powered devices to Stream Games Big Console Makers become Software Based instead not yet but eventually.

Been imagining all that for a decade. If game streaming is 100% mandated, I wouldn't argue. I'd like to run the games on my hardware.

I still prefer Snakes and Ladders at least I can roll the dice when I want at no extra cost but I bet they made a fortune back in the day when rolled to far get lost.

Down to shop buy more Dice different colours too and Pro Versions of the Dice with lead in them for extra weight.

I would mod mine with LEDs.

Xbox already pays sony some fees for using bluray tech, but that's a different kind of beast. This is collaborative, and must be because they're worried google is going to mess with their long-term plans to transition to a "games as service" platform rather than "games as product" platform. Hard to transition from a beloved platform to a less-desired platform if there's already a heavy hitter waiting to knock you off.

Nintendo won't do this, not until it's proven successful. And even then, only in a limited fashion until it makes more sense to do otherwise. Doesn't really make sense for their demographic. That may change, but not for at least 2 generations of consoles. So don't worry about them for now.

microsoft is definitely trying to transition to streaming only. I wonder if sony will just jump when the wind starts blowing one way or the other, or will push the industry towards streaming as well. I'll just have to become a nintendo+PC gamer only if that happens.

Sigh.. and they keep throwing time and money into a completely useless endeavor...
If I owned any of these big shot companies, I'd only keep minimum R&D on streaming itself, since it is worthless as long as latency exists (forever).
They should be focusing on instant transmission through photon teleportation instead (yes, that's a thing apparently), which would help everything on the Internet. Or any other faster-than-light information transmission method.

Ah, the one thing both Microsoft and Sony agree on: giving customers less ownership over their games.

I was just thinking that. Companies cant stand physical releases. One you have it they cant control you. As long as the physical media is still readable and the machine needed to play it works, they cant do shit. Once everything is in the cloud, you can only use it if they allow you to. Those that like owning nothing find it great and convenient. I will vote with my money which wont even matter to these companies. Ill wait till the cloud game services are hacked out of the server and ran on home computers. I have patients.

@sawao_yama oh really? How you gonna play your favorite games when the servers are gone? I'm guessing you must be one of those "i only play new stuff" gamers....SO i suppose it does not matter to you.
