OP
Have any modders ever considered making a raspberry pi based HDMI solution for the 3DS?
The only modding to the console itself needed would be a port that solders to the necessary points on the motherboard to grab the video and audio, then the raspberry pi could connect to the port and grab the video to convert to HDMI. Saves having to try and fit a whole conversion board into the 3DS shell.

I've also heard of USB mods having audio issues, so maybe the port could have a switch similar to the one in the GBA cartridge slot that switches between 3DS speakers and the port.

If I recall correctly, this is basically what Katsukity did for their TV export mod. You essentially got a modded DS and a 2015 model Raspberry pi that had janky push button controls over the GPIO pins.
With that said, I would be super interested in a mod like this being "open source"

Hey I think it's a great idea read on it over a year ago and someone said they're gonna get a fpga dev board to try it out and back then I remember they were like 300$ atleast the good ones I cannot find the post but when I looked up fpga dev boards today people sometimes recommend raspberry pi s the hard part would be micro-soldering and creating custom firmware

Unless someone ports snicker stream or kit-kat to a RPI format, your not likely to see a soft-modded solution.

The hardware-modded versions are dependent on the capturecard you have installed.
Loopy's is limited to the OG 3DS, the capturecard has sourcecode you can download and port to RPI.
Katsukity's already has a RPI version available, Kat's version is the opposite where you can build your own RPI hardware setup to run the provided RPI app. If you know what your doing, you don't need to even touch the buttons that shows up in the RPI diagram.

I'm talking about a new hard modding solution, since Katsukity is out of business and was too expensive in the first place + only did USB instead of HDMI without adding more devices and expense.

Soldering anything to 3DS or 2DS is defined as a hardmod. There were only 2 vendors that do hardmods and one is dead and the other doesn't support a 2DS XL.

https://www.merki.net/
Merki, which sells from both vendors just ran out of remaining stock to do any hardmod.
Yea, and the point of this thread is to express interest in a new solution and suggest an idea of what that solution could be.

Then you will need to buy a fpga dev board to make your own prototype capturecard. You can probably talk to loopy on how to do that if you email him. Kat is not responding to anybody after the bankruptcy.

You can go here to contact loopy.

Or wait for someone who does that type of stuff to do it so I can buy it off them.

Since Retrotink 2x can convert 240p from 3 different analog signals to 480p HDMI for $100USD, then I can't imagine something that does the same with a raw digital signal would need to cost more.

Your probably going to be waiting a long time or never. With the signs of the 2 switch versions slated for release and no 3DS games listed for release for 2020, 2020 is likely to be the last year of support for the 3DS. 3rd party stuff tends to drop off rapidly once the EOL is announced.

An HDMI solution for GBA has recently released, despite the GB Player already existing.

Nobody said anything about soft-mods working off an RPi. OP was talking about using the RPi as a way to grab and export video from the 2DS via a hardmod made to the system.

I've got programming experience, and electronics experience to some degree (robotics) but I have no idea what to even look into when it comes to soldering anything to the 2ds (like I'm assuming the Katsukity capture cards were a custom chip?). Otherwise I would be all over a project like this for fun, and because I could use it for a project of mine.

See post #10, since you failed to see I talked about both softmoded and hardmoded options. If you want a stab at making a capturecard, you can start by talking to loopy about what you need.

This could maybe be done but you wouldn't be running a normal OS on it, it would have to be something custom designed to run in realtime, synced to the display output. Normal OSes just aren't designed to run precisely synchronized like this. I think there was a real time OS ported to the Pi that might be suitable with some modifications.

Right, I saw that, but I was just addressing how you originally failed to read the OP and went on about softmods and ended up ultimately confusing OP before finally getting the point in post #10. I actually did reach out to Loopy, though I doubt he'll get back to me. I've got the time on my hands to try to come up with something, if I can get a sense of direction to get started. Would be happy to make it an open source piece of hardware if anything came of it.

I think how_do_i_do_that's post implies there's a software Kat distributed for RPi that handled this. Merki has a download for the pi viewer available, but I haven't poked around with the zip. Could require a license though, for all I know. Never messed with their capture hardware/software.

@CursedToast From what I understand the Pi in that case was essentially just acting as a TV out taking the output from the capture card in the modded DS and displaying it over HDMI. It didn't take the output directly from the DS displays. Essentially it was just a Pi with their capture software preloaded onto it.

A Pi as it comes from the factory doesn't have enough inputs to connect to a 3DS video socket (maybe the processor itself does, maybe you can still get enough performance with some multiplexing solution, but it will be definitely more than "buy our custom top-shell replacement that replaces the top screen with a connector for Pi or similiar") - custom boards and bulk purchases of chips (unless the commercial disaster known as compute module is sufficient) will probably apply

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
