Had a friends son update to 8.0 and guess what...it's NOT bricked.

Will it boot up into Atmosphere anymore? No.

Did it have AutoRCM enabled? Yes.

I have disabled AutoRCM and booted into official 8.0 for now. He will have to learn his lesson and wait. :)

nice to know
btw he can degrade to 7.0 if he has a backup

Seems pointless when it won't boot into cfw though or is this for people that used deja vu on 4. 0.1 switches?
That's the problem. Some might think it's possible to enable AutoRCM so it works like any other Switch. But it's extremely dangerous on those. If you don't have the option to some how disable AutoRCM again, you are SOL.

Auto RCM bricks on patched units because it's forced into RCM which is the recovery mode as the name implies. When there is nothing to boot it has no choice and it's completely independent of firmware. You can only repair this by connecting the eMMC module to a card reader and fixing the corrupted sectors.

Yes ipatched Switches using the Deja Vu exploit would brick but that's not in the public domain yet.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Or do it the manual way if he has none.

What's the manual way? He has no backup. You can't get into ChoiDujour on 8.0 so he's stuck for now no?

As long as you have unpatched unit, you can always use choidujour (non-NX version) and make 5.0.0 (or 6.0.0, idk now) NAND and go from there.

Patched switches with autoRCM will get bricked. Because you can't boot from RCM on them.

Yes, key word being *patched* as in without the RCM vulnerability. That said, why would someone enable AutoRCM on one of those in the first place? It's pretty obvious that would be the end result regardless of what firmware you're running on. Being stuck in RCM mode would normally be a brick if we needed Nintendo/NVidia signed recovery images, which we only don't need on unpatched switches because the bootrom has a stack smash.

I accidentally updated my unpatched switch to 8.0 because I'm a moron. If the word of a former 3DS CFW developer means anything, it didn't brick. I went through the downgrade dance with the usual tools to get back to 7.0.1 and everything is fine again.

TX is spreading false information.
