You can generate a Wii common-key.bin in the ShowMiiWads application. Tools -> Create Common-KeyHello everyone.

It's actually really simpleWhat are wads? Also whats the beat hard drive to use (cheap but effective). I plan to home brew my wii tonight and I've been looking into it all week. Seems way more complicated than my SNES classic or 3ds was

what ? no dont use anything you find, it may not work usb sticks are known to not work properly but you could get luckyIt's actually really simple
Almost any exhdd should work, you can even use a USB stick (or SD card in a USB adapter)
In my experience every USB stick and exhdd I have used worked, but I guess since there is a chance it won't - it's good to consult the guide.what ? no dont use anything you find, it may not work usb sticks are known to not work properly but you could get lucky
here's a compatibility list for hard drives : https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List
make sure to use a recent tutorial ( the ones on this site are the best )
if you want to understand what you do, use Cyan's guide : https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-hacking-explained.501605/ (not finished but exellent)
dont be afraid to ask question andif you have one, ask it here or create a thread
dont do something you dont understand please.
and good luck, its easier than you think.
not because all of them worked for you that every usb sticks wil always work, but anyways, we're here to learn from one anotherIn my experience every USB stick and exhdd I have used worked, but I guess since there is a chance it won't - it's good to consult the guide.
Y' know what, nevermind helping you if you're this rusty. I'm not gonna explain what it is.I have no idea what the „homebrew“ app is, and where i can find it, can someone help me with a link?
Sd card, that’s it.(and a pc to transfer the files)What are the essentials for wii modding as of now. Like progams in such and basic equipment if needed?
Edit: PM with the details
Would usb work?Sd card, that’s it.(and a pc to transfer the files)
Hdd and wifi connections are quite useful but not necessary.
Might work for an hour, day, week, month.Would usb work?
I used a thumb stick and never had issues - if you already have one no reason not to try itWould usb work?
All I really want to do is off load the files such as homebrew launcher and all that on to the hdd if possibleMight work for an hour, day, week, month.
You will run into more issues then you want.
You will have the flash drive shit out eventually, it will corrupt, it will make you want to throw your Wii at a horse.
You'll end up spending ~$40 on new flash drives, thinking it will work, it won't.
Spend the $ on a 250/500gb/1tb HDD, your experience will be a lot better.
People (noobs) will say "U r an stoopid they work gr8 u just dont no wat u r doing"
Smart people will tell you how it is.
Flash drives are shit, HDD is the only way to go.
(look at what Cyan says. Follow what Cyan says. He's the person I've learned most of the Wii stuff from, just reading his posts will bump your IQ a few points)
You should use an SD card for that. They are pennies on the dollar for the size you'll need - 2gb would work perfect. All I really want to do is off load the files such as homebrew launcher and all that on to the hdd if possible
see the thing is I lost my sd card and all I have are usb drivesYou should use an SD card for that. They are pennies on the dollar for the size you'll need - 2gb would work perfect.
(If you're talking about just booting homebrew apps)
